1 MATH

What Are You Learning? I CAN add fractions and mixed numbers. I CAN convert improper fractions into mixed numbers. 2

Why Do You Need To Know This? AAdding fractions is important because many real-world situations deal with fractions. SSuch as recipes, measurements, distances, lengths, and heights. 3

Vocabulary  Improper Fraction: An improper fraction is a fraction with a numerator that is greater than or equal to the denominator.  Ex: 19/5 21/8  Mixed Number: A mixed number is the sum of a whole number and a fraction.  Ex: 2 1/5 6 1/4 4

Converting Improper Fractions into Mixed Numbers 1. Divide to see how many times the denominator will go into the numerator – this will be your whole number. 2. Your remainder will be your new numerator. OR multiply the whole number and denominator and subtract that answer from the numerator to get your new numerator. 3. Keep the same denominator. 4. Simplify if needed! 5

Convert each improper fraction into a mixed number. a. 9/4 b. 10/3 c. 9/2 d. 20/3 e. 22/5 f. 29/5 6

Vocabulary Like fractions Fractions that have the same denominator. Unlike fractions Fractions that have different denominators. 7

Adding Like Fractions  Add the numerators.  Keep the same denominator.  Simplify if needed. 8

Find each sum. a. 5/9 + 2/9 b. 7/12 + 4/12 c. 6/7 + 3/7 9

Adding Unlike Fractions  Find the least common denominator.  Change the numerators. (Find equivalent fractions)  Add the numerators and keep the denominator.  Simplify. 10

Add. Simplify if needed. a. ½ + 1/6 b. 1/3 + 1/9 c. 7/8 + ¾ d. 5/6 + 4/9 12

Adding Mixed Numbers  Add the whole numbers.  Add the fractions.

Adding Mixed Numbers Write in simplest form. a. 7 ¾ + 2 ¾ b. 7 1/ /8 c. 7 ¾ + 2 2/3 d. 6 1/ /6
