Unlocking The Purpose of Organization If a Sunday School is properly graded (organized), it is possible to have everything of value to make the Sunday School efficient. -Arthur Flake An effective organizational plan places the resources of the church at the full disposal of the Lord that they might be used in the most efficient manner for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. -Ken Hemphill If a Sunday School is properly graded (organized), it is possible to have everything of value to make the Sunday School efficient. -Arthur Flake An effective organizational plan places the resources of the church at the full disposal of the Lord that they might be used in the most efficient manner for the fulfillment of the Great Commission. -Ken Hemphill

Breaking Through: A Good Organizational Strategy Will: Have a leader that takes responsibility. Have the support of the Pastor. Organize Preschool departments by age, Children and Youth by grade, and Adults by closely graded age groupings. Emphasize healthy ratios of leaders to learners. Emphasize individual class/department organization. Have a leader that takes responsibility. Have the support of the Pastor. Strengths/Weaknesses of Large Groupings Strengths Generates enthusiasm. Requires fewer leaders. Lends to better dynamics for music. Weaknesses Eliminates interaction with the teaching. Involves fewer people in leadership. Minimizes interaction with guests. Strengths Generates enthusiasm. Requires fewer leaders. Lends to better dynamics for music. Strengths/Weaknesses of Small Groupings Strengths Everyone can participate. Relationships can be built. Ministry can be provided to all members. Weaknesses If too small, momentum is difficult. Some activities are not possible. Requires more leaders. Strengths Everyone can participate. Relationships can be built. Ministry can be provided to all members. When is a class too large? When the teacher does not know each student personally. When the group is too large for discussion or Q&A. When the room is more than 80% filled on a regular basis. When less than 40% of those enrolled are attending. When the teacher does not know each student personally. When the group is too large for discussion or Q&A. When the room is more than 80% filled on a regular basis. When less than 40% of those enrolled are attending.

How many classes do you need? Divide your total enrollment by 20 to determine the total number of classes that you need.

A Note About Larger Churches: Larger churches tend to have “slightly” larger classes, but remember, the further you stray from the ratio, the more difficult it will be to minister to your members and to assimilate new members and guests.

Ineffective Organizational Strategies Grade classes by weight! Grade classes by I.Q.! Grade classes by shoe size! Grade classes by hair color! Grade classes by letting everyone go where they are comfortable. Grade classes by weight! Grade classes by I.Q.! Grade classes by shoe size! Grade classes by hair color! Grade classes by letting everyone go where they are comfortable.

Why Age-Grade All Departments? Age grading simplifies organization. Age grading assists guests. Age grading assimilates. Age grading enhances the educational environment. Age grading gives accountability for follow-up. Remember: You do not age grade based on who attends, but rather based on who you want to reach! Age grading simplifies organization.
