Back to 2008! Steps to applying to college!

Steps to deciding on a school Read up- Check out the college and career center, search online, and read any other info you can about the schools you are interested in. Ask around- Do you have friends or siblings in college? Ask the what the best and worst parts about their school are Check majors- Decide on something that you would like to do. Does the school offer your major? How is the reputation?

Apply. This step is important- don’t forget to make the deadlines! Decide on living arrangements. Visit the school! –If you can, go for a whole weekend or a few days in a row so you can get the feel for the whole experience.

The big decision I applied to: –ISU –Eastern –U of I –Iowa State –Grand Valley State- this was my school of choice! I chose ISU, and I went in as a communications major with a photography minor. I wanted to be a photojournalist SO BADLY!

My big bummer summer The summer after my senior year, I freaked out! I was going to be leaving all my friends, my family, and my boyfriend of two years. I was bummed, and not looking forward to leaving for school. I let it wreck all my fun!

preview In late July, I went to preview at ISU. That’s what they call orientation. My mom and I went down for the weekend. The school had planned all kinds of activities, like barbeques, socials, and parties. What kind of stuff did we do? –Made schedules –Toured the campus –Stayed in dorms –Met our counselors –Had fun

Packing your life away What kinds of things do you guys think you will be packing? Some examples: –Clothes –Cd’s/DVD’s –Toiletries –FLIP FLOPS!!! Don’t forget these –School supplies –Computer/TV/DVD –Personal items you can’t live without, like your blankie! (DON’T WORRY- 54% of college kids still sleep with one!) How do you know what you need to bring if you are living with someone????

The big day! We packed two vans full of junk- I am a major packrat! We had to wait in line for about 10 hours to get into my building- the largest dorm in the world. I freaked when they left. About 2 hours later, I was having the best time ever.

what about the first day of class? Nerves! Teachers are cool- they know that many of you are new to this. You will get a syllabus for each class- this outlines the topics that will be covered, as well as due dates for important assignments. It will also have contact info for your teachers.

ISU Football Field! Go Redbirds! My friend’s apartment junior year! The football field. Tailgating is a must!

Tips for Surviving Your Freshman Year 1. TRY NOT TO SCHEDULE BACK TO BACK CLASSES! 2. Begin the first day of class. 3. Establish a routine time to study for each class. 4. Establish a place to study. 5. Do as much of your studying in the daytime as you can.

6. Schedule breaks. 7. Make use of study resources on campus. 8. Find at least one or two students in each class to study with. 9. Study the hardest subject first. 10. Be good to yourself.

Questions From You! What is a credit hour? How many hours do you get for an average class? What is an RA? What’s a TA? About how many classes do you take a semester? What is FAFSA? How many hours do you need to graduate with an associates? A bachelors?
