 5 reasons you might want to flip your classroom  “What about students who don’t have internet access at home?”  3 baby steps toward flipping your classroom  The evolution of my flipped classroom  Small groups & pairs  Student-made videos

1) You won’t be exhausted at the end of the day “In most classrooms, teachers work very hard, and their students watch them work very hard.” -Ted Sizer

2) Use class time for other things  Group work  Projects  Student video projects

3) Absent students can watch videos Absent students Suspended students ISS students ALC students

4) ESL teachers (and others) will love you  ESL teachers  Students  Guidance Counselors  Parents  Other teachers

5) Your students will be 100% silent (and on task) while watching your videos in class

“What about students who don’t have internet access at home?”

Students can use the computers: - In my room… - In the media center… - In the computer lab(s)… - In any public library… I can give students all my videos on a flash drive or DVD Videos can be viewed on cell phones

Baby Step #1 – Make one video, save it to your hard drive, and use it in class instead of lecturing on that topic. What you’ll need:  a video camera (approx. $80) or smartphone  a classroom computer  a projector Nice to have:  Tripod  DIY whiteboards ($12 at Home Depot)

Baby Step #2 – Upload the video to youtube. What you’ll need:  a google/youtube account (free)

What my classes used to look like 1. Warm-up 2. Review homework 3. Lecture/notes 4. Practice problems What they look like now 1. Warm-up 2. Video/notes 3. Practice problems (in pairs) 4.
