US 1 COLLEGE PARK – SEGMENT 1 FROM COLLEGE AVE/REGENTS DRIVE TO MD 193 (UNIVERSITY BLVD) Presentation to College Park City Council August 5,

PROJECT OVERVIEW 2

Corridor Overview  US 1 Project Planning Study extends from College Avenue to I-95/I-495 (Capital Beltway)  Located in the City of College Park  Received federal approval in 2005  Divided into Segment 1, 2 and 3 3

US 1 - Segment 1 Overview  Segment 1 (College Avenue to MD 193) is the only segment currently under active design. The rest of the corridor (Segments 2 and 3) is unfunded and currently on hold.  Segment 1 limits extend from College Ave/Regents Dr to MD 193 (University Blvd) for approximately 1.4 miles 4

Purpose and Need 5  To improve safety for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians that travel along the corridor, manage access, and provide aesthetic improvements to establish US 1 as a gateway to the City of College Park and the University of Maryland, College Park (UMD-CP).

PROJECT SCOPE 6

Existing: US 1 - College Ave to Lakeland Rd 7  4-lane divided roadway  Raised median  No shoulders  Aligned with fields, parking lots, and office buildings owned by University of Maryland-College Park (UMD-CP).

Existing: US 1 - College Ave to Lakeland Rd 8 US 1 in front of UMD-CP

Existing: US 1 - Lakeland Road to MD  5-lane undivided roadway  Two-way-left-turn-lane (TWLTL)  No shoulders  Aligned with businesses and medium- density residential neighborhoods.  Some existing sidewalk that is not continuous and non-ADA compliant

Existing: US 1 - Lakeland Road to MD  US 1 at Navahoe Street

Proposed: US 1 – College Ave to MD  Roadway widening along US 1  Two 11-foot travel lanes  6-foot buffered bike lane in each direction  The existing five-lane section between Lakeland Road and MD 193 will be converted to a 4-lane section with a raised landscaped median, varying in width 4 – 14 feet.

Proposed: US 1 – College Ave to MD  Other improvements include pavement resurfacing, landscaping, drainage system upgrades, stormwater management facilities, signage and pavement markings, intersection lighting and associated utility relocations.  All sidewalks, pedestrian ramps, driveway entrances and bicycle facilities will be ADA- compliant.

PROJECT KEY ISSUES 13

Access Consolidation 14  SHA is researching existing Access Permits to a State Roadway for several businesses with more than one access point to US 1.  The process of consolidating access points will involve meeting with property owners to discuss proposed improvements.

Aerial Utilities 15  SHA is moving forward with design assuming that existing aerial utilities will remain aerial.  SHA will hold a coordination meeting with all utility companies in Fall 2015, to discuss design and relocation schedules

Aerial Utilities 16

Bicycle Lanes 17  Proposed along US 1 within the limits of work  6 foot wide buffered bicycle lanes and pocket lanes  Signed and marked as “Bicycle Lanes”

18

Bicycle Lanes 19 Bike Lane Markings along US 1

Bicycle Lanes 20

Landscaping 21  Proposed grass buffer and trees along the roadside and median  Providing 5’-6’ wide buffers where feasible, to accommodate for trees  Providing 0’-2’ buffers where trees are not feasible to avoid significant damages to adjacent properties.
