BY LUCAS GOVATOS AND AUSTIN MINNER HOW THE INTERNET HAS AFFECTED NEWSPAPERS

THE FACTS Daily Newspaper circulation has been in decline since 1970, mainly due to other forms of media like Television In 2003 and 2004 the Newspaper industry, not only in circulation but also revenue took a gigantic hit and has been declining rapidly since However the circulation of Sunday Newspapers has been increasing since In the past seven years, the industry has taken over 35,000 job losses and 166 newspaper cuts and redundancies.

THE FACTS CONTINUED US Newspaper Revenue Source: Newspaper Association of America

THE FACTS CONTINUED Bureau of Labor Statistics. Magazines and Newspapers prices have dropped significantly (roughly 30-50%) and Internet has increased tremendously. (Around 500% increase!)

SOCIAL MEDIA Social Media has had a huge factor on the news industry. Social Media sites such as Facebook and Twitter allow users to customize who they follow and what kind of news they end up seeing on their feed. This also allows them to get real time updates compared to the Newspaper, which would have to wait until the next issue printed.

HAS THE INTERNET BENEFITED THEM? The internet has helped newspapers in various ways as well. Some newspapers have gone digital, allowing for faster updates and better ad’s directed towards their users. Newspapers such as the Capital Times, NY Times, and USA Today have all been performing well with the Internet by using it to their advantage Many have still fallen in this day and Age. Rest in pieces. (
