3500 bc Sumerians record pictographs representing words on clay tablets. The Sumerians developed one of the earliest civilizations on earth ( B.C.), but the existence of such a people and civilization was not even suspected until the middle of the 19th century. faculty.gvsu.edu/websterm/SumerianMyth.htm

900 The Byzantine navy was the naval forces of the East Roman or Byzantine Empire. Like the empire it served, it was a direct continuation from its imperial Roman predecessor, but played a far greater role in the defense and survival of the state than its earlier iteration. While the fleets of the unified Roman Empire faced few great naval threats, operating as a policing force vastly inferior in power and prestige to the legions, the sea became vital to the very existence of the empire in the east, which several historians have called a "maritime empire".

First printing press 1450 In 1440, German inventor Johannes Gutenberg invented a printing press process that, with refinements and increased mechanization, remained the principal means of printing until the late 20th century. The inventor's method of printing from movable type, including the use of metal molds and alloys, a special press, and oil-based inks, allowed for the first time the mass production of printed books.

1609 first newspaper printed Newspapers began circulating in the 17th century. The first newspaper in England was printed in (However the word newspaper was not recorded until 1670). The first successful daily newspaper in Britain was printed in Then in 1730 a newspaper called The Daily Advertiser began publishing stock exchange quotations. The first American newspaper was printed in It was called Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick. The first newspaper in Canada was the Halifax Gazette in The first daily American newspaper was published in In Britain the first Sunday newspaper was the British Gazette and Sunday Monitor published in In 1785 the Daily Universal Register was first published. In 1788 it was renamed The Times. In 1814 The Times was printed with a steam-powered press for the first time. In 1848 The Times used a rotary printing press with the printing face wrapped around a cylinder for the first time. Meanwhile the Observer was founded in The Daily Telegraph was first published in The Manchester Guardian was founded in It changed its name to The Guardian in The Sunday Times was first published in The Financial Times began in Meanwhile The News Of The World was published in Meanwhile the first Australian newspaper was published in It was called the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser. Newspapers became far more common in the late 19th century. In the 18th century and the early 19th century stamp duty was charged on newspapers, which made them expensive. However in 1855 stamp duty on newspapers was abolished and they became cheaper and more common. In the mid-19th century newspaper reporters began to use the telegraph as a means to get news to their newspapers quickly. Then in 1880 The New York Graphic became the first newspaper to print a photo. In Britain the first tabloid newspaper was the Daily Graphic published in In 1891 it became the first British newspaper to print a photo.

1876 first telephone In the 1870s, two inventors Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell both independently designed devices that could transmit speech electrically (the telephone). Both men rushed their respective designs to the patent office within hours of each other, Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell entered into a famous legal battle over the invention of the telephone, which Bell won.

1877 first phonograph The next time you listen to a favorite album, you can thank Thomas Edison for discovering the secret to recording sound. Before there were CD players and tape decks, there was the phonograph. August 12, 1877 is the date popularly given for Thomas Edison's completion of the model for the first phonograph. Edison was trying to improve the telegraph transmitter when he noticed that the movement of the paper tape through the machine produced a noise resembling spoken words when played at a high speed. Experimenting with a stylus (hard-pointed instrument like a large needle) on a tinfoil cylinder, Edison spoke into the machine. Do you know the first words ever recorded?

1884 long distance phone call March 27 - On this date in 1884 the first long-distance phone call was made, between Boston and New York City. Branch managers of the American Bell Telephone Company in Boston called their counterparts in New York City. (The second call was probably from a telemarketing company.) The telephone has a fascinating history. It's one of the common items in homes that has drastically changed within the memory of people living today.

1924 first pics transmitted In the 1930s, wirephoto machines of any reasonable speed were very large and expensive and required a dedicated phone line. News media firms like the Associated Press, used expensive leased telephone lines to transmit wirephotos. In the mid-1930s a technology battle began for less expensive portable wirephoto equipment that could transmit photos over standard phone lines. A prototype device in the experimental stage was available in San Francisco when the large Navy air ship Macon crashed in the Pacific off of the coast of California. A photo was taken and transmitted to New York over regular phone lines. Later a totally portable wirephoto copier and transmitter was put into use by International News Photos, which could be carried anywhere and needed only a standard long distance phone line.
