Subsea Industry Standardization Landscape API SUBCOMMITTEE 17 WINTER MEETING January 2015 Subsea Industry Standardization Landscape Terry Cook – API SC17 Vice-Chair 1/20/2015

Industry Standardization Status Information Courtesy of IOGP (International Association of Oil & Gas Producers – formerly OGP) Recognition to: Dave Wilkinson – ExxonMobil Roald Sirevaag - Statoil 1/20/2015

Industry Standardization Status OGP Subsea Installations Taskforce commissioned consultant to assess standardization within the subsea industry. The objective was to gain overall picture of ongoing/planned standardization efforts to provide starting point for discussions within the taskforce of initiatives to support and prioritize. Did not include API/ISO activity, as IOGP agreed these activities are well-known to most of the task-force members. 1/20/2015

Summary of IOGP Consultant Observations/Conclusions (1) Standardization - current buzzword across major operators & vendors. Considered a key to cost reduction - most operators have implemented some sort of internal standardization. What seems to be missing is industry collaboration on what to actually standardize and how . . . There are only a few ‘vehicles’ that specifically enable a unified platform for collaboration (DNV, API/ ISO, OTM, Wood Group Kenny). It is difficult to look at the landscape of on-going activity and to conclude what additional activity is required: This is partly because of not being fully aware of what API/ ISO are either working or what they have already delivered 1/20/2015

Summary of IOGP Consultant Observations/Conclusions (2) For subsea equipment, we see 3 core areas for standardization: Interface standardization (physical and communication based) Specification, qualification and testing standardization Recommended practices for operation, usage or some other activity Interface standardization normally allows future ‘plug and play’ options. This normally has the greatest amount of resistance from vendors Specification, qualification and testing standards need to be driven by operators. But few operators have either the will or the resources to participate Recommended practices, being non-binding, are the simplest However, these are seen as often having little impact in achieving true standardization or eventual cost reduction 1/20/2015
