Successful and ongoing projects St.-Georg- Mittelschule Augsburg/ Germany

Best of … Reading – learning – scenario: students work in groups on various aspects of a chapter of a book (history, music, cloth, characters, …)

Best of … Reading diaries: students document their reading Mark Twain “Tom Sawyer” For every chapter students work at - unknown words - voluntarily selfmade pictures - characters- resume of the whole book - summary

Best of … “ZiSch”: daily newspaper at school Learning about different kinds of news making a newspaper the structure of a newspaper Students work at one newspaper article compulsary and one voluntarily unknown words summery of one article

Best of … “Gedanken-Gedichte-Gedankendichte“: poetry reading and writing as a way to express feelings. At the end a book was published with poems and fotos written respectively taken by students of a 9 th grade. Students read some poems learn about different kinds of poems and interpretation write poems about farewell, new beginning, life and future

Ongoing projects Motherlanguage Reading: Parents read out in mother- languages f.e. italian, englisch, turkish … “Antolin”-Competition: German internet reading community “2-4-1” (two for one):Second graders prepare a reading bag for first graders “Reading Dog”: students read out to a special educated dog Magazine project: offer of different magazines “heartbeat”: writing competition “Herzklopfen” published as a book Rotaries, who have donated the “Leseinsel”, read out Athlets read out

Ongoing projects Reading night: a class spends a night together at school, reading, playing, …. Week of reading projects "Ich schenk dir eine Geschichte" („ I give you a story as a gift“) Worldwide Day of books Nationwide reading day Book safari in bookstores: students have to fulfill tasks in several book stores to get a book for free “Bookworms of St.-Georg”: media workshop 8 th grade A lot of projects with the New Public Library and our “Leseinsel”

Conclusions Due to the results of the questionaire we started a lot of projects to motivate and convince students. Students don´t read because of other medias Implementations: owlfinch; Antolin, Experience: The combination of modern medias, like Internet, and reading motivates students. But their main motive is playing games. They are not interested in literature and international cooperation/ communication but in collecting points for quizes. So at our school they enjoy “Antolin” more than “owlfinch”.

Conclusions Students don´t read because it´s boring Implementations: Reading events; reading night; summer reading club; book safari; “Papyrus”; “Heartbeat”; Romeo and Juliet; “Ich schenk dir eine Geschichte”; “Bookworms of St.-Georg Experience: Those activities are very motivating. Students love to take part and to act out their creativity in painting, writing and acting. We want to continue and widen out reading events.

Conclusions Students don´t read because of lack of comprehension Implementations: “Stikk”; Salzburger Screening Experience: At the beginning it is a hard work to implement a habitual using of dictionaries. Students don´t read because there are little reading models at home Implementations: VIPs as roll models: Athlets, local Politians and Rotaries read out Experience: Those activities are very motivating. Students love to take part because they get in close contact to people they know from medias.

Conclusions Due to gender and age students need a guidance to adaequate literature Implementations: all activities in NPL and “Leseinsel”; class literature; teachers training Experience: The teacher has to know the interests, the standard of lingual abilities and reading skills of the students to select adaequate literature. Even reading classics could be fun! Nevertheless nowadays it´s a hard work to guide students to books because of the rivalry of other medias.
