Drivers engaged in the carriage of dangerous goods must be given adequate training and instruction to enable them to understand: The nature of the dangers to which particular dangerous goods being carried may give rise The action to be taken in an emergency concerning them. Their duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

Driver Training Requirements The Regulations require Drivers to: Attend & Complete an approved Training Course and practical assessments Pass a City & Guilds written examination Obtain a Vocational Training Certificate (VTC), which is valid for five years Attend a refresher course within a period of not more than twelve months and not less than 6 weeks preceding the expiry of the original Carry a valid VTC during the carriage of dangerous goods, unless exempt

Driver Training Requirements The VTC requirement applies to drivers of: Road Tankers Vehicles carrying tank containers Vehicles carrying explosives Vehicles in excess of 3.5t carrying packages over the load thresholds set down in ADR 2005 (Removed in 2007)

Other Training Requirements All employees involved in the carriage of dangerous goods must receive training appropriate to their responsibilities. In relation to Drivers this includes drivers of vehicles less than 3.5t and Drivers of dangerous loads below the threshold. Operational, sales, administration, warehouse and FLT drivers
