Bellwork: September 18 th 1. What is the symbol?

Meet 13 year old Meena.

Meena works and goes to school.

She rises early in the morning to go to work at a factory and weave carpets.

She learned to weave from her mother. Her mother, in turn, learned from her mother.

After several hours at work, Meena leaves the factory in the afternoon to go to school. Her day at school is not finished until the sun has set.

Meena has no time for sports or music practice. She must work to help her family earn money.

However, the carpets that Meena makes are very important to her country and her culture.

These carpets are not just for covering the floor. These carpets are also used for chairs, beds, and prayer mats.

Much of Meena’s country shares the same religion and uses the carpets for prayer mats.

In fact, much of the culture in which Meena lives is heavily influenced by this religion.

What region does Meena live? What religion does she and her people practice? In what ways does religion influence their culture?
