Lesson 2: Measuring Matter By: Mr. Leslie’s Class
How do you… How do you measure the height of a giraffe? –Measure it, of Coarse! Scientists, over time, have developed a system of measurement for the world. All Scientists use the metric system.
Metric System…Huh? The metric system is a system of measurement based on multiples of 10. Metric length Imperial/USA Length 10 millimeters=1 centimeter 12 inches=1 foot 10 centimeters=1 decimeter 3 feet=1 yard 10 decimeters=1 meter 22 yards=1 chain 10 meters=1 decameter 10 chains=1 furlong 10 decameters=1 hectometer 8 furlongs=1 mile (5280 feet) 10 hectometers=1 kilometer (1000 meters)
Mass Mass is the amount of matter in an object. A kilogram is 1000 grams –A major league baseball bat or a whole pineapple. A US dollar bill weighs 1 gram
Volume Volume is the amount of space that matter takes up A liter is 1,000 milliliters –These soda bottle are 1 liter
