Class Discussion Thursday, October 9th Study Figure 1.11 from page #9 in your textbook. What is this chart telling us? Does this information change your opinion on globalization? Why or why not?

Objectives To review information from textbook on globalization To understand the arguments for / against globalization To quickly review culture

Culture Learned or shared behavior that is held in common by a group of people.

NOT THIS!

Nationalism DEFINE: devotion and loyalty to one's own nation; patriotism. QUESTION: can nationalism be a “bad” thing?

Ethnocentrism DEFINE: When you believe that your culture is superior to another culture. Question: can ethnocentrism be a “bad” thing?

Cultural Hybridization Sometimes called Cultural Syncretism. The blending of two cultures to form a new, synergistic form of culture. EG – Indian Yuppie

African Proverb Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better start running. —An African proverb as quote in Thomas Friedman, The World is Flat (2005), p. 114.

Globalization The economic, political, and cultural changes that are increasing the interconnectedness of people or places worldwide. Occurs and influences areas/cultures all over the world - does not only start in /spread from the U.S. and Europe

Anti-Globalization Economic disparities between the “Have’s” & the “Have Not’s” NOT A NATURAL PROCESS Leads to a “bubble economy” – massive cash flow into developing country, (inflation = values / prices increase) then leads to depression Globalization has lead to the loss of unique cultural attributes of traditional societies. E.g. Language

Pro-Globalization ECONOMIC CONVERGENCE Economic prosperity will “trickle down” to the poorest nations poor countries will gradually catch up to advanced countries Increases productivity / opportunities of global economy Countries will concentrate on activities for which it is best suited. E.g. – Should Americans be making automobile?

Middle Globalization is inevitable. Countries and people must put themselves in the best position to benefit from this phenomena. International organizations and national governments must work together to ensure that this process is cohesive rather than disruptive.
