EMMA Electrical Engineering July 06 EE & PS Group EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Electrical Engineering - Overview Specification, Assembly & Installation Power Converters Motion Control Electrical Distribution Assembly & Installation RF System Vacuum & Control Personnel Safety Beam Diagnostics EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Unipolar DC Power Converters Electron Ring Option 1 – 42 F magnets series connected & 42 D magnets series connected. 2 power converters required – Used for costings Option 2 – 42 F Quad magnets in series + 2 sets of 21 D Quad magnets in series. 3 power converters required Transfer Line 9 Quad magnets all individually powered, plus 1 dipole. 10 power converters required Diagnostic Line 4 Quad magnets all individually powered. 4 power converters required EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

DC Power Converters Specification EE & PS Group – EMMA 06 Specification Required: Stability ±100ppm (Commercially available units tested to better than ± 50ppm) Resolution 15ppm (Set by DL control system – DAC for ERLP) A Bipolar correctors design is available and can be built at DL Improved performance will increase costs

Pulse Power Converters EE & PS Group – EMMA 06 Two Pulse power supplies are required: Injection Kicker Extraction Kicker Actual ratings and performance need to be specified It is anticipated that these can be achieved with semiconductor switches Similar design to that used on the SRS

Motion control requirements 84 axes for magnet adjustment. 21 axes for RF phase shifters 5 ancillary Magnets require +/-12mm of motion with a 5 micron accuracy. 1mm linear ballscrew with 400 step/rev provides 2.5 micron steps EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Position Control Feedback Options 1. Closed loop encoder feedback. 2. Open loop with position information e.g. Sylvac probes 3. Open loop without feedback. EE & PS Group – EMMA Closed loop control has the advantage of continually correcting position but is the most expensive option. High speed non-contact position feedback utilising tape scale linear encoders can easily provide resolutions of better than 5 µm. The encoder highlighted is compact and easy to install and set-up. Accuracy to ±1 µm/m,. Bi-directionally repeatable optical reference mark

Position Control Feedback cont’d 2. Open loop with position information e.g. Sylvac probes A less expensive option - However it may require more software or controls interfacing which may offset any cost saving. 3. Open loop without feedback We are currently investigating a stepper controller which operates stepper motors in a closed position loop without position sensors EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Stepper Motors High energy Neodymium magnets for increased performance 50% more torque than conventional hybrid types Choice of single or double shaft options High quality & Economical prices 8 leads provide the choice of Uni-polar or Bi- polar operation EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Electrical Distribution The ERLP distribution system has spare capacity which will be used for EMMA. 2 new distribution boards to be installed close to the rack positions. –1 distribution board will be dedicated to the RF racks. –1 distribution board will provide all other EMMA supplies. A cable route from the ERLP distribution in the Tower basement to the new EMMA distribution boards is required. This will require diamond drilling. EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Cable Management Overhead cable routes from racks into the centre of EMMA ring 3 levels of cable tray within the EMMA ring Level 1 - magnet cables Level 2 – controls cables Level 3 – mains supplies EE & PS Group – EMMA 06

Rack Requirements Number of Racks required: Motion Control2 Power Converters2 Diagnostics1 RF Auxiliary3 Vacuum / Controls3 Total11 EE & PS Group – EMMA 06 ERLP Rack room is fully populated, but even if available would require long cable lengths An alternative location for the racks is required possible within the Experimental area RF Amplifier Systems may require an additional 7 double racks

Power Converter & Control racks Location EE & PS Group – EMMA 06 Area available for controls and power converter racks ? Gantry solution preferred

Power Converter & Control racks Gantry EE & PS Group – EMMA 06 Typical Rack Gantry Required to house the Electrical equipment 7.5m
