Serving a New Generation: Web 2.0 and Beyond User Experience Webinar Series ~ presented by Kristiana Burk

Laying a Foundation… today > Web 2.0 and Beyond Digging Deeper: Upcoming Webinars Layered Content Make Learning Fun Thematic Approach to Organizing Resources

Groups In Focus… year olds year olds

3 Guiding Principles technology is personal one word sums it up: infotainment they expect you to come to them

They Can’t Live Without… Experienc e Transparency Reinventio n Connection Expression Taken from Mind Your X’s and Y’s by Lisa Johnson –

Characteristics… - Busy multi-tasking - I plan my time-wasting - Everything is for a cause - I’m smarter than you think In between classes, study times, in the library, at the traffic light, while cooking a meal or waiting to pick up my kids from school, on my mobile phone, while watching tv, downloading songs or listening to a new podcast. Once I find what I need then I feel the need to share it with my friends by word of mouth, via text or my Facebook status. Because I need to feel like I am making a difference in the world - I need to feel connected for areas that interest me. My mobile device is my best friend. Time is everything; credibility is secondary.

Top Activities - - Instant Messaging - Playing Online Games - Seeking Out News & Current Events Info Primary Places of Access to Internet - Home - Library - Mobile Devices

Generation X - Use Internet functionally - Focus on services and tools - Gravitate towards expert opinions – conduct research online Generation Y - Gravitate towards blogs and social networks - Contribute content online (video, pictures, writing) - Prefer advice of peers over experts

‘really does need her own computer’ ‘is killing time before going to work...’ ‘is listening to Pearl Jam’s Ten’ ‘wishes she had a piano’ ‘sees there is an art to Twittering, but has not quite mastered it. Could one write a novel in this small space, for instance?’ ‘says: check out page 82 of this month's Atlanta Parent magazine. Article & pics by yours truly.’

Favorite Sites… Community submitted content that is voted on by users to push “the best” or “most popular” to the top of the list. Users are able to share and comment on the content with friends and other Digg users. A social network of over 150 million users. Primary ages on Facebook include year olds. One of the fastest growing networks on the web. Users share thoughts, resources, photos, events and more with Facebook. Often essential integrated piece of daily life for its users. Popular RSS/ “My Space” spots Most popular bookmarking, rss and “my customizable spaces” places on the web. Includes iGoogle, MyYahoo!, del.icio.us, and Google Reader. Users frequently integrate rss feeds into these pages and reference back to main sites from there rather than returning to a site manually each day.

Favorite Sites… Community-based video media social network. Extremely popular as an entertainment outlet for younger internet users. A big part of this is the viral sharing of the videos onto blogs and amongst friends. Two other popular user-vote and review sites. Users post reviews and vote up or down content to lift it to the top. Both help users discover and explore content while satisfying the entertainment craving. Allows user to connect all of their various social media site activity into one place. Users are able to see friend activity as well through feeds in their space. Another helpful feature of friendfeed is the ability to automatically post feed activity to Facebook accounts – increasing in- bound links and exposure to resources.

Reaching Out… - short and sweet - quirky and consumable - remember: I want to share! - go where they are - get them involved / turn it into a cause

Ways to Leverage the Viral Web… LibGuides Resources

1. Submit entry to Digg 2. Have Everyone in Your Network / Staff Digg It (5 seconds) 3. Setup w/ Friendfeed 4. Posts to Facebook Wall Example Way to Leverage Viral Web

Leverage LibGuides Viral Features

Leverage Rankings in Google with Guides

New Examples of Connections on Web: Facebook Connect

Other Ways to Reach Them… - turn on and push comment features - students create guides or contribute - make guides more interactive (WIMZI, Sprout, embedded PowerPoint, embedded video, galleries, polls, factoids) - push RSS and share features - blogs, Facebook and LinkedIn groups and events, grab n’ go widgets and packages of content

Thank you! Kristiana Burk Channel Director
