 NUTRITION: Study of nutrients and how the body uses them.  Weight Control  Growth Development  Academic/Job Performance

 Sufficient protein and fat intake is vital to higher- order brain function the ability to concentrate  An even level of blood sugar, can keep children alert throughout the school day.  A nutritious diet can improve your performance

 Part of the job of a child's body is to grow into an adult.  Poor nutrition during development years can mean weaker bones, organs and thinking.  Not enough amounts of key vitamins and minerals over an extended time.

 Most adults live by the habits they developed as children. (Cooking skills, Out to eat, Types of foods ate)  Adults who eat according to healthy nutrition guidelines are at a significantly reduced risk for health problems.  osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, heart disease  The positive body image that comes from good nutrition can also lead to lower risk for anxiety, depression and eating disorders as an adult.

 PSYCHOLOGICAL desire for food. (MIND) Body might not need the fuel at the time.

 Body’s PHYSICAL need for food.  Important to know the difference so that you will know why you will eat.

 NUTRIENT: Substances found in food that your body needs.  Factors that affect nutrient needs: Age/General Health/Gender/Activity Level  What are nutrients role for the body? Build new tissue Repair damaged cells Produce energy

 Explain how appetite can affect which foods you choose to eat.  What do Nutrients do for your body? How is it possible to have plenty of food and yet be poorly nourished?

 Objectives: Identify the 6 classes of nutrients; Explain ways your body uses nutrients  Recall: What is a Nutrient?

 Six classes of nutrients Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals Water BUT WHEN AM I EVER GOING TO NEED TO USE THIS STUFF IN REAL LIFE?

 SUGARS AND STARCHES THAT ARE NATURALLY FOUND IN FOODS.  45% - 65% OF YOUR DAILY INTAKE  FRUITS, VEGETABLES, GRAINS, FIBER: The parts of fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans that your body cannot digest. Helps push other foods along digestive tract Why Fiber? To reduce certain types of cancer or heart disease.

 Nutrients your body uses to build, repair, and maintain cells and tissues.  Sore muscle for a few days then gets better after a few days of rest. You have experienced “repair” proteins at work.  Found in animal based products such as: meats, poultry, and dairy

 Help with healthy skin, cell growth and carry vitamins around body  Types: SATURATED FAT: SOLID AT ROOM TEMP. These are not good for your overall health. Too much can cause heart disease UNSATURATED: Remain a liquid at room temp. Good Fat. Plant based foods: olive oil, nuts, avocados

 2 THINGS: FAT LIKE SUBSTANCE IN FOOD AND A FATTY SUBSTANCE IN BLOOD.  Comes from animal based foods.  You need some cholesterol but not too much.  Eating too much SATURATED FAT raises blood cholesterol which can lead to heart disease.

 Arteries Are Like Garden Hoses They come in different sizes Too much “ water mineral” deposits over time and the hose can become clogged

 VITAMINS: Substances that help your body fight infections and us other nutrients. (TYPES: A, B, C, D, E)  MINERALS: Elements that help form healthy bones and teeth and regulate certain body processes (TYPES: CALCIUM, IRON, POTASSIUM)

 Vitamin & Mineral supplements ARE NOT a shortcut to good nutrition.  Supplements can result in too much of some vitamins & minerals which are eliminated from the body in urine.  Too much fat soluble vitamins are stored by the body and can lead to health problems.

 FUNCTIONS:  Regulates body temp and blood circulation  Carries oxygen & nutrients to cells  Removes toxins from body 48 ounces of water intake daily. Spread throughout the day.  Dehydration: Lack of water in the body Muscle Cramps/Fatigue/Lack of Focus
