Waste Management for a Sustainable Future June 12, 2015 Lissa McCracken Executive Director

KPPC is a state-mandated technical service center and Kentucky’s primary resource to help businesses, industries and other organizations develop environmentally sustainable, cost-saving solutions for improved efficiency. KPPC is based at the University of Louisville J.B. Speed School of Engineering, and provides technical information and assistance that is free, confidential and non-regulatory. Who is KPPC – Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center

Defining WASTE WASTEWASTE ater ir olids & Liquids ime nergy

Our Universal “Backyard”NIMBY Not in My BackYard NOTE NOPE CAVE BANANA Not Over There Either Not On Planet Earth Citizens Against Virtually Everything Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything

Waste Minimization Waste Minimization Program-in-Place The reduction, to the extent feasible, in the amount of hazardous waste generated prior to any treatment, storage, or disposal of waste

Source Reduction The Pollution Prevention Act of 1990 gave us the definition of Source Reduction and a hierarchy to follow

Proactive Planning: Move Up the Hierarchy Disposal Treatment Energy Recovery Reuse & Recycling Source Reduction & Energy Efficiency (E2) Continual Improvement

Proactive Approaches to Source Reduction Environmental Management Systems (EMS) Green Chemistry Lean Manufacturing

What Drives An Organization?

Barriers to Success Emphasis on Process Inadequate Training Lack of Planning Poor Communications Lack of Patience Assigned to a Person, Not a Team Treated as a Special Program

A Sustainable Future KPPC - Kentucky Pollution Prevention Center works with its clients to help them develop and use a Systems Approach The Center has helped more than 800 Kentucky businesses and organizations achieve success resulting in more than $30 million in actual and identified savings

Leadership & Commitment A Systems Approach requires Leadership & Management Commitment to continual improvement In order to succeed, an organization must move from creating awareness to taking action

The 7 Steps KPPC builds on the EPA’s Seven-Step Energy Management Process to assist clients 1 - Make the Commitment 2 - Assess Performance & Opportunities 3 - Set Performance Goals 4 - Create an Action Plan 5 - Implement the Action Plan 6 - Evaluate Progress 7 - Recognize Achievement

MANAGEMENT The HARD Side of Change… Is about Processes, Measurement, Tools, Structures & Procedures LEADERSHIP The SOFT Side of Change… Is about Buy-in, Commitment, Overcoming Resistance to Change & Self Leadership There Are Two Sides of Organizational Change

Waste Minimization: Manufacturing Process Through a Systems Approach, KPPC client Denyo Manufacturing improved its: Recycling - scrap metal, cardboard, plastic & wood Water & Natural Gas Usage Waste Water Treatment Process Chemicals

Waste Minimization: Printing Facility Kentucky-based FetterGroup, with technical assistance from KPPC, reduced their solid waste pickup by 40 percent, while over 95 percent of their waste goes somewhere other than a landfill

Waste Minimization: Corporate Offices KPPC’s award winning client Kindred Healthcare in Louisville undertook a number of sustainability projects, including: energy reduction, purchasing eco-products that are 100% biodegradable and using plant-based plastic products

Waste Minimization: Industrial Process Water Before trial - 7,600 Gallons Per Day After trial - 2,700 Gallons Per Day JanFeb MarchApril Client saved an average of - 3,200 gallons per day and lowered cost of treatment and sludge hauling

Building Sustainable Businesses “Business strategies built around the radically more productive use of natural resources can solve many environmental problems at a profit” Amory Lovins, Hunter Lovins & Paul Hawken “A Road Map for Natural Capitalism” 1999

A Unique Opportunity KPPC offers Kentucky businesses and organizations a unique opportunity to take advantage of engineering technical assistance at very low, or no cost

KPPC Services Workshops Webinars On-site Assessments Brief Assistances On-site Training

KPPC Can Help KPPC can help with both the Leadership and the Management side of Organizational Change
