University’s Dissatisfaction with the lottery Over time the housing assignment process had become a conduct process  Difficult for staff and students to understand and explain process  Creates a perception that the process favors some students over others.  Conduct point system does not account for a student’s development and ability to learn from his/her experiences.  Marycrest- Negative Impression of Housing May 2012: Task force convened to redesign the assignment process  Peer institutions not helpful  Students should have agency in the process (roommates/housing preferences)  Learning experiences should be a part of the assignment process  Conduct point system was ineffective/lottery ineffective tool for assigning students HISTORY & TIMELINE

January 2013: “You aren’t dreaming big enough”  Committee chaired by Associate VP/Dean of Students and Assistant Dean & Executive Director of HRL  Map learning across four years  Design an out of classroom learning curriculum for students  Opportunity to establish an alignment between the housing assignment process and HRL’s vision for residential learning May 2013: University Housing Assignment Task force work completed March 2014: Introduction of a new assignment process for rising sophomores  Designed learning experiences  Roommates  Room type HISTORY & TIMELINE

FLIGHT PLAN  What?  Why?  How? Flight Plan: The printed “blueprint” for involvement answering the questions:

 The vision for learning in residence.  3 Goals for Learning: Learning Goals are the holistically-focused, intended results of what you hope to learn during your time as a UD student. Authorship Interculturalism Community Living WHAT IS AVIATE?

 3 Outcomes of learning, for each Goal: Learning Outcomes are what you should accomplish and be able to do as a result of your experiences in AVIATE. WHAT IS AVIATE?

Getting involved means…  You are more likely to have a higher GPA  You are more likely to finish college  You are more likely to be satisfied with your residential experience  You are more likely to develop life skills necessary for your future  You are more likely to have higher gains in areas of values and ethics, being an active/informed citizen, working effectively with others, solving complex real-life problems and acquiring job or work related knowledge and skills. WHY SHOULD I PARTICIPATE?

HOW CAN I GET STARTED? Learn about available Engagement Opportunities (EOs): EOs are active elements of your flight. It’s what you do in order to work towards reaching your goals and objectives.  Flight Plan

IMPORTANT NOTES:  Some EOs require pre-registration.  Due to space and staffing limitations, many EOs are "first come, first serve." Students are encouraged to sign up or arrive early to opportunities to ensure they are able to participate. In some instances, if student interest exceeds the number of spaces available for an event, facilitators may be able to provide another opportunity at a later date and time.  The list of EOs in the Flight Plan is not exhaustive. Throughout the year, additional EOs will be added and advertised online, via and/or with print marketing.

HOUSING ASSIGNMENTS PROCESS FLIGHT PLAN HOW DOES THIS IMPACT MY HOUSING? PATH Points Accumulated Towards Housing

PATH HOW TO EARN POINTS ① Attend any opportunity that is eligible for PATH. ② Depending on the event, your PARTICIPATON will be recorded. Please note: Participation credit is different than PATH credit. ★ Participation Credit= Credit granted that confirms physical presence. Participation Credit will be granted in one of the following ways: You will be asked to swipe your Flyer One card An HRL or UD staff member will manually track your participation online using You will be asked to sign into a paper participation sheet ③ Once your participation has been recorded you will be notified by ④ Upon being notified, you must complete a POST-EVENT REFLECTION. Please note: PATH credit will only be granted if a reflection has been completed in full, within 30 days of the event. To sum it up: Participation + Post-Event Reflection = PATH

HOW WILL PATH PLAY OUT?  Each experience (i.e. FYE, SYE, UDE) has a set number of opportunities eligible for PATH, open only to that experience, that can be earned each year.  Because rising Juniors and Seniors (or, current Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) will always be participating in the same assignments process, their experience-specific points will always be equal, despite that the opportunities will differ.
