Marking Out Tools & Equipment Steel Rule Steel rules are made from Carbon or Stainless steel. The most common sizes are either 300mm or 150mm. They should be used for measuring when marking out and NOT for drawing straight lines. ***

Marking Out Tools & Equipment Try Square A Try Square is used for marking lines at a RIGHT ANGLE to the edge of a piece of material. It can also be used to check to see if the surfaces of any item are at 900 to each other. ***

Marking Out Tools & Equipment Marking Gauge A Marking Gauge is used to mark lines PARALLEL to the edge of a piece of material. The STOCK can be adjusted to move up and down the STEM to the required size. Many Marking Gauges have brass facings in the stock. This prevents the stock from being worn away in use. ***

Marking Out Tools & Equipment Scriber A Scriber is used to mark the surface of Metal and Plastic and gives a fine, accurate line. The mark is scratched into the surface of the material and CANNOT BE REMOVED. To avoid the surface of the material being scratched, a Scriber can be used after a coat of Marking Out Fluid has been applied to the material. ***

Marking Out Tools & Equipment Centre Punch A Centre Punch is used to mark out the position of a hole that is to be drilled. This will centre the point of the drill and prevent the drill from wandering across the surface of the work. When used on metal, the Centre Punch should be struck ONCE in a firm manner, using a hammer. This will prevent the Punch from bouncing and moving to a different place. ***

Marking Out Tools & Equipment Micrometer A Micrometer is used more for MEASURING than for MARKING OUT. It will measure the thickness of materials VERY ACCURATELY - down to 100ths of a Millimetre. This can be useful if you are making parts which need to fit accurately together. ***
