Why Use Graphics You can't imagine how many times I was told that nobody wanted or would use graphics … now everybody uses them. -- Jef Raskin, the creator of the Macintosh
Graphics vs Text Graphics Are slower Use more resources to display Java 100M+ of memory Less flexible Interface is pretty much hard coded Generally less options for customization Tend to show the wrong information Coders tend to know little about target audience Often used gratuitously, Serve no informational purpose, just noise Geeks hate Graphics, But it doesn’t have to be that way 06/05/08
Information Overload Graphics can be much more powerful than text 1.Humanize (Macintosh) 2.Consolidate (Mosaic) 3.Simplify (Google) Graphics are the future. If as developer and/or designer you can come up with solutions, you can revolutionize. It’s not easy though, and I have never met a UI genius (met tons of coding geniuses)
Graphics “The human nervous system … is exceptionally good at parsing visual information, especially when that information is coded by color and/or motion.” Knowledge representation in cognitive science. Westbury, C. & Wilensky, U. (1998)
Parsability of Graphics Infocus – (overhead projectors) sited a study that humans can parse graphical information 400,000 times faster than textual data
