Unit 6 Seminar SC235 – General Biology I HIV and AIDS 1

Welcome to Unit 6 of General Biology I! Seminar will begin at the top of the hour. Feel free to talk among yourselves until then. I expect that all of you have prepared for tonight’s Seminar. We have a lot to cover tonight and we will be moving fairly quickly. I am also available during office hours each week by AIM, so send me a message if you have questions, comments, or concerns. 2

Okay, it is time to get started… Remember that your participation in Seminar is graded each week. Answer questions asked of you, ask questions if you have them, and try to have fun this hour while keeping comments relevant and on topic. Start any questions you have for me with Paula: and do the same if speaking to a classmate.

EVERYONE: Questions or comments before we begin?

AIDS may well be the worst health crisis humans have witnessed in centuries. While science has made some nearly miraculous advances in treating HIV infection and AIDS in the past dozen years, the disease continues to sicken and kill millions of people around the world. In preparation for this seminar, you should've watched the Thinkwell video An Attack on the Immune System to learn about how HIV wreaks havoc on the human immune system. You should've investigated the HIV treatment guide as well. We will be discussing HIV and AIDS and answering the questions found in the Seminar instructions.

What did you think of the video “An Attack on the Immune System” about how HIV wreaks havoc on the human immune system?

What is HIV?

How is HIV different from AIDS?

How is HIV transmitted?

What are the current recommended treatments for HIV?

Why do we use a “drug cocktail” to treat HIV instead of only using one medication?

How do we monitor if HIV treatment is working How do we monitor if HIV treatment is working? What blood tests do we do?

Where are the majority of HIV and AIDS cases located throughout the world? This website may help: http://www.avert.org/worlstatinfo.htm

Are we nearing the “end of AIDS”? Why or why not?

Why do you think some nations are unable to obtain drugs that they need to prevent/treat HIV disease?

What have some nations done to help decrease the rates of HIV infection?

What advice would you give to a young person in the U. S What advice would you give to a young person in the U.S. who has just discovered that s/he is HIV-positive? This website may help: http://www.aids.gov/

How would your advice be different if that person lived in Uganda? This website may help: http://www.aidsuganda.org/

What are some local resources in your area for people with concerns about HIV or AIDS?

Does anyone have personal experiences or interesting facts to share?

EVERYONE: Questions or comments?

That’s the end of Seminar. I hope you had fun and learned something along the way. If you have questions, comments, or concerns, feel free to ask now or contact me via AIM at InstPMurray during office hours or via email at pmurray@kaplan.edu. See you next time!
