During our last lesson we learnt that cities can change over time… Just like Dunedin and Wellington have over the years… Images Dunedin Wellington
But why do cities change?Lets explore some of the reasons why cities may change…
1 People moving to the city
The number of people living in a city can grow very quickly over time More people come to a city because there is a better lifestyle here The city begins to grow as more people choose to live in the city Image: People moving to the city
There are two ways a city can grow… sideways upwards
A city can grow sideways if there is enough land…
Image: Manukau, New Zealand Houses and buildings are spread across because there is enough land Manukau has almost 400,000 people living here
A city may have to grow upwards if there is not enough land…
Image: Hong Kong, China Houses and buildings are built very high because there is not enough land Over 7 million live here! There are more people living in this city than people living in New Zealand!
A place that started with hundreds of people has changed over time into a city with millions of people Image: Shanghai, China When Shanghai was first turned into a city there were less than 100,000 people Shanghai is now the 2 nd largest city in the world with over 23 million people!
2 People leaving the city
The number of people living in a city can become smaller over time More people may leave the city because there are no jobs left They may have to leave because they can not afford the lifestyle they want or the house they live in… Image: People leaving the city

Many people moved here but over time that has changed with many people leaving Image: Detroit, USA In 1950 almost 2 million people lived hereBy 2010 there were only 713, 777 people living hereOver 1 million people have left the city since 1950!
3 A natural disaster
A natural disaster can change the appearance of a city in a very short time An earthquake has changed the appearance of Christchurch city Image: The city does not look the same to many people living in Christchurch
The earthquake damaged roads, homes and buildings Image: Christchurch, New Zealand Many buildings have been here for over 100 years and will now have to be pulled down as they are no longer safe
Over time the appearance of Christchurch city will change as new buildings will replace old and damaged buildings Image: Christchurch, New Zealand Over 200 buildings will be demolished because they are unsafe

Lets recap on what we have learnt so far… As we have seen cities change for different reasons…
So what have we learnt so far? From having thousands of people to having millions of people By rebuilding after a natural disaster From having many people move to the city, to many people leaving the city And grow sideways (if there is enough land) or upwards (if there is not enough land) Over time a city can change…
