WARM - UP

How do you feel when you see these pictures? Do you think that it is good for every country to have heavy population?

SPEAKING ACTIVITIES

Asking questions related to different points of view

Read the conversation in your textbook and then draw the patterns that show your points of view Do you think living in the Antarctic is a good idea? Yeah, it’s terrific. I can go skating there. And are you for or against living there? I’m dead against it. It’s too cold, and you can’t find people living in such a cold place.

Here are some useful expressions for you to ask questions about people points of view: QUESTIONS Formal expression Could I ask about your reaction to_______? What is your attitude towards______? Is _______ acceptable/ satisfactory? Less formal/ informal expressions What do you think about___? Do you think_____ is a good idea? Are you for or against____? Is ____OK for you?

To state your points of view, you may use the following expressions: FORAGAINST Formal expression I’m very much in favor of that. I think____ is quite acceptable/ satisfactory. I can see no reason to oppose____. Formal expression I’m certainly not in favor of that. I’m (definitely) opposed to______. I must say_____ is quite unacceptable. Less Formal/ informal expression I think_____ is very good/ OK. That’s a great idea! _____ is terrific!/ fantastic!/ great! Less Formal/ informal expression I’m (dead) against_____. Surely not! That’s not a good idea. ______is terrible/ awful.

Now, practice the model conversation using new expressions: Are you for or against living in the Antarctic? S u r e l y n o t ! I t ’ s t o o c o l d a n d n o b o d y c a n l i v e i n s u c h a p l a c e. I think it’s OK. Is that ok for you?

Can you tell us something about these places? Can you realize where are they?

I heard that there are four seasons in Japan. Every season has its own beauty. Do you think living there is OK for you? Surely not! You know, I can’t stand the cold weather in winter.
