Introduction In poetry, a meter is a recurring pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line. Furthermore, one line has to be within ten syllables.

Foot A foot in poetry, is a pair of unstressed and stressed syllables. EX: |comPARE|= 1 foot {ShallI} {comPARE}{thee TO}{a SUM}{mer’s DAY?} = 5foot

Types of feet There are poetry that has the different patterns of stress. EX: Iamb (Iambic) Unstressed + Stressed =Two Syllables Trochee (Trochaic) Stressed + Unstressed =Two Syllables Spondee (Spondaic) Stressed + Stressed =Two Syllables Anapest (Anapestic) Unstressed + Unstressed + Stressed =Three Sylla bles Dactyl (Dactylic Stressed + Unstressed + Unstressed = Three Syllables Total: 5 types of feet
