Track and Field

Track and Field Overview Sprinting events Mid/Long Distance events Jumping events Throwing events Hurdles Relays Red is input

Overview Track and field consists of many different events and is the core of the Olympic movement. The sport was first featured at the first games at Olympia in 776 BCE. A full size track usually measures 400 meters in circumference with 6 or 8 lanes. Track meets are scored as a team through points earned from each event as a group or individual places Ex: 1st place=10 points, 2nd place=8 points etc.

Sprints A sprinting event usually consist of 4 phases. The start, the acceleration, the stride, and the finish. Events 100 meter sprint 200 meter sprint 400 meter sprint

Mid-Distance/Long-Distance In any type of distance race, runners start from a staggered lane assignment before being able to break into the inside lane Runners in these events do not use starter blocks. Athletes in these races concentrate on relaxing into the stride in a good even fast pace. Mid Distance Events 800 meter Long Distance Events 1600 meter 3200 meter

Jumping Events -Each jumping event has a different approach. -Triple jump consists of 3 long one footed jumps before landing and long jump consists of 1 long jump before landing. A jump that steps over the board on the initial take off is a scratch and would not be judged. Both are measured for the farthest distance. -In high jump athletes typically use the Fosbury flop to jump off of 1 foot in attempt to jump over the bar. A jump with 2 feet is illegel and would not count. Jumpers must clear the bar without knocking it down. Polevault is the same concept however athletes use a pole to launch themselves over the bar. Both are measured for the highest cleared jump. Events Long jump Triple jump High jump Pole vault

Throwing Events In all throwing events, athletes throw a different object (weighted ball, disc, javelin spear, ball and wire) as far as they can using varying techniques gliding or rotating. Events Shot put Discus Javelin (olympic only) Hammer (olympic only)

Hurdles Hurdle races consist of sprinting with hurdles to jump over every so many feet. The “3 step” stride method is applied for the shorter events, 100 and 110 meter races. Events 110 meter high hurdles Mens 100 meter Womens 300 meter intermediate hurdles HS (400 meter College/Olympics)

Relays Each of the four athletes race one section or leg of the race, handing a baton to the next member of the team within a marked hand off zone. The shorter distance 4x1 race uses a blind handoff, verbalizing when the runner should reach back to get the baton. Events 4x100 meter 4x400 meter 4x800 meter
