Population began to increase significantly about 10,000 years ago due to the development of agriculture and the domestication of animals. Not until about 400 years ago did the population reach 500 million. It took about 150 years for the population to double to 1 billion (1800). In the 20 th century, as a consequence of medical advances, the population reached 2 billion by 1930, 6 billion by 1999, and 7 billion by The projected population by 2050 will be 9 billion.

Culture in its broadest sense is cultivated behavior; that is the totality of a person's learned, accumulated experience which is socially transmitted, or more briefly, behavior through social learning. A culture is a way of life of a group of people--the behaviors, beliefs, values, and symbols that they accept, generally without thinking about them, and that are passed along by communication and imitation from one generation to the next.
