2. Getting Meaning from Context The following exercise helps us to define a word through its context. In his well-known painting The Third of May, the Spanish artist Goya depicted soldiers shooting a group of simple people. What part of speech is depicted? (Noun, Verb, or adjective) What kind of person might depict something? What does depicted mean? When we finish, we may check our definition in a dictionary.

3. Read the text entitled “What can We Learn form Art 3. Read the text entitled “What can We Learn form Art? Interactions 2, pp. 164-166. 3.1. Understanding Outlines: On page 170 there is a possible outline for the reading selection. The general topics are filled in. But the reading also contains many subtopics that serve as supporting material. Use the list of subtopics available on p. 169 to complete the outline.

3.3. Discuss with your friends the following questions: (p. 172) Tell about art in your culture. Describe typical works of art (paintings, statues, decorations on building, etc). What is the function of art in your country? How does people view art? Is thee cave art in your country? If so, tell your group about it. What kinds of art do you prefer? Why?

Distinguishing fact from theories Read the text “Window on the Stone Age”, p. 187 then fill the line whether the following statements are facts or theories. 1. ______A small wind coming from a pile of rocks might indicate a cave under the rocks 2. ______The Chauvert cave is more improtant than Lascaux in France and Altamira in Span. 3. ______The art was in good condition when they discovered it. 4.______ Nobody had disturbed this art for up to 20,000 years. 5. ______The artists who created the paintings in the Chavuvert cave had remarkable talent.
