World History

Historians rely mostly on documents, or written records, to create their pictures of the past. The problem is written records did not exist for prehistory of humankind Important Terms: Prehistory Archaeology Anthropology Hominids Homo erectus Neanderthals Homo sapiens sapiens Paleolithic Age (Old Stone Age)

Question: What regions in the world were dominate forces throughout history? Why? Hypothesize about why some countries have accumulated great riches over time while other remained historically poor. Guns, Germs, and Steel

The end of the last Ice Age, around 8,000 BC, was followed by what is called the Neolithic Age (New Stone Age) Important terms: Systematic agriculture Agricultural revolution Civilizations Worksheet (Basic Characteristics of a civilization)

Basic characteristics of civilization: Cities Government Religion Social structure Writing Art….why is art included? Why are these characteristics important to building a society?

We are a Modern World History course but it is important to understand the development of civilizations and review significant civilizations in our history. How did they emerge, what did they leave behind, and why important. Each table will be given an early civilization that is within your textbook. (There might be groups with two) Use the “basic characteristics of a civilization” to describe your civilization. Also, ask yourself what did they contribute to our history. Make sure you explain this as well on your poster. The homework portion of the assignment is to bring in something today (an image or an objective) that we still use that your civilization contributed.
