5 © 2010 by Dr. Neuhaus Telekommunikation GmbH UMTS – Core Netzwerk  UMTS is using it‘s own radio access network, separated from GSM  UMTS is using W-CDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) air interface standard  The UTRAN Network logically cuts into RNSs (Radio Network Subsystem)  A RNS is a geographical region which is managed by a RNC (Radio Network Controller).  Single RNS‘s can be cuts into Location Areas (LA)  MSC, SGSN and GGSN are core components of GSM/GPRS 2G network and are used by the UMTS 3G network.
