Connectivity Convention Background Until now a central core contruction has been the most commonly used. There is a tendency to move towards higher fiber counts and that’s why central core cable construction comes to it’s limit. This has made room for loose tube constructions, but still direct buried. Central core cable has been grounded simply by using a clamp and tightening it. When this is done for loose tube cable with corrugated steel tape, the cable is easily damaged. There was a need for reliable solution to do the grounding for a loose tube cable. Some installers are using SCHO for making the connection, but it’s made for aluminium not for steel. Direct buried cable, the most common type in Finland.

Connectivity Convention Process One of the largest operator Elisa, came to us and explained that they have seen several times that loose tubes are crushed due to cable fixation and grounding in a closure. That is causing attenuation. There is limited number of technical people at Elisa, they are purchasing ready installations, material and installation as a kit. Installation companies should take care of the right installation methods, but the dilemma is that what is right for an installer, is not always good for the network owner. Elisa approved our solution immediately after receiving samples. Elisa is a telecommunications and ICT service company serving approx. 2,2 million consumers, companies and public organisations both mobile and fixed servises. Approx. 35% market share.

Connectivity Convention Product We used our knowledge with copper and introduced a new product for the customer, a roll spring. We created a kit which includes all needed components for the installation together with an installation instruction. The benefit for the customer is that grounding is working and they will find the cables when needed. The problem is that the old cables are found easily but the new ones with poor grounding are not. When digging is done near by a cable route often the new cables are cut due to those has not been found and marked.

Connectivity Convention Result This product is to be used always when grounding is done for a loose tube cable. The more important than the money for us with this product is that we are building our image as an expert in fiber. For copper our brand is know and valued, we have to gain the same position also in fiber. By doing that we’ll reach our numbers with bigger projects.
