SPS2: Students will explore the nature of matter. d. Demonstrate the Law of Conservation of Matter in a chemical reaction.

LAW Conservation Matter

Law of Conservation Matter (Mass) Matter/Mass can NOT be created or destroyed. States that the mass of all substances present before a chemical change equals the mass of all the substances remaining after the change. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dExpJAECSL8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5o-UjU8l_3M&feature=related

Law of Conservation of Matter Lab PICK A SET OF LAB SUPPLIES Make your own lab using: Baking Soda Vinegar Flask Balloon Electronic Scale Make your own lab using: Baking Soda Vinegar Pippett Plastic Lunch Bag Electronic Scale On back of lab sheet make a FLOW MAP of your procedure. This MUST be down before you can get your lab supplies.

Phrases to use in flow-map Initial mass Final mass Put baking soda into balloon. Put vinegar into the flask. Do NOT let the reaction occur. Mix baking soda and the vinegar. Allow the reaction to occur. Do not take off the balloon. Attach the balloon to the flask. Find the difference in mass.

EDIT QUESTIONS #1 – OMIT #2 – If you did not lose mass explain. #4 – ANSWER #5 – ANSWER Answer should be in complete sentences!
