Reading for Content & Critical Thinking

Expectations & Assessment Students are expected to: Do the assigned reading every night. See calendars available on line. Take notes on the reading. See recommendations below. Answer the reading questions on each chapter study guide in complete sentences. Hand in Chapter Analysis – see directions that follow. Students will be assessed for proficiency in Content – through weekly reading assessments and comprehensive knowledge AP style assessments. Analysis – through completion of Chapter analysis, see directions,rubrics and examples At the instructor’s discretion, students may arrange to revise work towards establishing proficiency or greater mastery.

Recommendations Reading notes are a resource for you as you are learning. Your notes will not be graded. You will be assessed for content mastery almost every week. Take notes that make you comfortable and are most useful to you. You may bring in your notes for feedback at any time during the course

Recommendations 4. Use any of the following to help organize your notes: Write the chapter and page numbers of sections at the top to keep things in order. Turn the purple sub-headings into a question that you respond to and make sure you cover the 5 Ws in your response: Who, What, Where, When and Why is it significant. For example: What was the pathology and care for the Black Death? If there is a key term in the section, include it in your notes and indicate it is a key term. Use arrows, pictures, symbols etc. that help you recall information. As you are reading and you aren’t sure if something should be in your notes ask yourself: “Why does the fact/event/person or detail matter?” If you can’t come up with an answer quickly it is unlikely it is a key fact.

Recommendations 5. DO NOT do the following: Copy out of the textbook. Copy your friend’s notes. Use the textbook as a study tool. GET BEHIND

Political – government structures, institutions, rulers Economic – economic structures, leaders, systems Religious – systems and institutions of belief and how they change and affect events Social – social classes, treatment of specific groups based on characteristics such as religion Intellectual – philosophy, development of thinking Artistic/Cultural – all the arts, shifts in how culture is created, used, consumed Women – status and changes in status Technology – advances, changes, innovations and their impact

Chapter Analysis ‘Critical Thinking and Expression’ category For each chapter you will do an analysis of each section. Sections are indicated by titles in blue. Most chapters have 4-5 sections. For each section, you must do two different types of analysis: Cause and Effect: you must do this for each section Choose one from: Compare and/or Contrast Change Over Time Revolution Suggestion: One way to approach this is to turn the blue heading of the section into a question. For example: What was a long term cause of the Black Death? (Chpt 12 Sect 2) What was revolutionary about the Black Death? 3. Each type of analysis must include at least 1 piece of factual evidence. 4. Please use the sentence frames provided to write your analysis.

Cause and Effect (must do both) Cause: Identify and explain what led to an event, both long term (20+ years) and, when appropriate, short term (20 years or less). Compare and Contrast Identify and explain the similarities and/or the differences between two things, events, people, etc. You should try to do both, however if you choose to do only one it must be contrast. Revolution Analyze the degree to which a theme, idea, or movement changed the course of history. Address 2-3 specific PERSIAWT categories.
