U.S. Green Building Council LEED Platinum Award © photo by Djamel E. Ramoul For innovations in: sustainable site planning improving energy efficiency conserving materials and resources enhancing indoor environmental quality safeguarding water

LEED = Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Point System: = Bronze = Silver = Gold 36+ = Platinum Bren Hall achieved 37 points for Platinum rating. Building surpasses the new Title 24 requirements for energy efficiency by more than 31%.

Sustainable site planning  “White-cap” roofing with solar reflectivity of 83%  Landscaping features native and drought- tolerant plants  19 California sycamore trees placed around Bren Hall to shade building and reduce “heat island” effect

Improving energy efficiency  Day-lighting controls – detect amount of natural light in the room and adjust level of lighting accordingly  Operable windows/HVAC interlock – windows can be opened to take advantage of ocean breezes; sensors automatically turn off heaters while windows are open  Photovoltaic panels – generate 7-10% of building’s energy needs

Conserving materials & resources  Construction waste management – 100% of demolition waste and 93% of construction waste was diverted from landfill and recycled  Occupant recycling – Bren School recycles 89% of its office waste  Fly ash in concrete, porous paving (turf block)  Recycled-content materials used for exterior and interior insulation, fireproofing, ceiling tiles, and flooring

Enhancing indoor environmental quality  System filters  Permanent air monitors for CO, CO 2, VOCs, and particulates  Paint has zero to low VOCs; surpasses 2005 air-quality lead-free standards  Indoor floor mats at entrances to laboratory wing trap 60-70% of particulates from foot traffic

Safeguarding water  Waterless urinals  Automatic valves on bathroom sinks; automatic flush valves on toilets  Water-conserving cooling towers  Water-efficient landscaping  Reclaimed water used for irrigation and in first-floor toilets

 First building in UC system to achieve LEED™ status  Official pilot project of the University of California  Set precedent requiring that all new UCSB capital projects meet LEED™ certification (over $800M in capital projects planned over next 7 years)  A “living laboratory” for high-performance sustainable design and construction “The Bren School at UCSB is a role model for all buildings and campuses in California.” - Former CA Governor Gray Davis

 $5 million for expendable fund component  $15 million endowment fund component $20 million to University of California Donald Bren Foundation Pledge Agreement

 $1.5 million for Bren Student Fund  $2 million endowment for Dean’s Chair  $2.5 million for Visiting Professor Program  $2.5 million for two endowed chairs for Distinguished Professors of Environmental Law  $2.5 million for two endowed chairs for Distinguished Professors of Corporate Environmental Management  $4 million for four endowed chairs for Interdisciplinary Professors Donald Bren Foundation Pledge Agreement $15 million endowment fund

Thank you
