Proteus Operational Characteristics Will Bolton

Proteus was used successfully in FY02 deployment… Carried operating ARM-UAV payload from Mojave, CA, to Ponca City, OK, during engineering/transit flight 12 flights for total of 75 flight hours over 21 days 4 flights on consecutive days including 8.75 hour flight 2 hops in one day including refueling and changing out faulty C-MIGITS in 21 minutes Non-refueled flights from Ponca City to Colorado/Wyoming border and Gulf of Mexico and return with several hours on station No lost flight opportunities due to aircraft (or payload) maintenance or problems.

ARM-UAV Program objectives The ARM-UAV Program was established to… Develop measurement techniques and instruments suitable for use with the new class of small, high altitude, long endurance UAVs Demonstrate these instruments and measurement techniques in field measurement campaigns Support the climate research community with valuable data sets Foster the development of advanced UAVs… …while utilizing the most appropriate aircraft at each stage of the program Although our choices of aircraft were limited in the wake of 9/11, Proteus is the right aircraft for near-term missions.

ARM-UAV has conducted ten major field campaigns Field Campaigns to date: Fall 1993, Edwards AFB, CA Spring 1994, Northern OK Fall 1995, Northern OK Spring 1996, Northern OK Fall 1996, Northern OK Fall 1997, Northern OK Spring 1999, PMRF Kauai, HI Summer 1999, Monterey, CA Winter 2000, Northern OK Fall 2002, Northern OK GA-ASI “GNAT 750” (F93, S94) Grob “Egrett” (F95, S96) GA-ASI “Altus I” (F96, F97) SCI “Proteus” (F02) Twin Otter (F93, S94, F95, S96, F96, F97, Sp99, Su99, W00) GA-ASI “Altus II” (Sp99)
