Unit 7.5 – Data Handling Project Outline You work for a music shop called ‘Sound Tunes’. The manager has asked you to produce a database to hold customer details, the type of music and the album name. To be able to do this you will need to create a questionnaire/data capture form to record these details from customers. They also want a spreadsheet that will hold all the stock information for the shop, and calculate how much profit they have made. You will also create a graph to show the data in a much easier way to understand. You will use your database to search for information and produce reports for the manager. You will use your spreadsheet to change variables, make predictions and solve problems.

Lesson 1 – Creating a data capture form and researching prices of CD’s using a reliable website Goals – WALT: To create a data capture form framing the questions. Understand the information we need to gather to obtain the correct answers. Search, select and judge whether information is reliable and accurate. Combine information from different sources. Goals – WILF: A data capture form that includes the correct questions to find out the information required. 10 people to complete your form. Interpret the data from your form and use it to search for relevant information. Interrogate and select relevant information from reliable websites. Record any relevant data in your completed forms.

Starter: Introduction to data capture forms and choosing a sample A data capture form is similar to a questionnaire; it is designed to ask questions about a particular thing. A sample is the group of people that you want to answer the questions. For example if you wanted to find out about school dinners you wouldn’t ask a sample of old age pensioners. Who would you ask (sample) to find out about the types of music they have bought?

Task 1 – Creating a data capture form Design your own data capture form/questionnaire to find out: the names of the people buying the music, their age, the type of music they purchased, and the name of the artist/group. How much they paid for their CD. Conduct your data capture form to a sample of 10 people

Task 2 – Selecting relevant information from reliable sources Look at your completed data capture forms for the name of the artist. Use the following Internet sites to select the price for the artists CD: Record these prices on your completed data capture forms next to the artists name.

Homework Bring in an example of a data capture form/questionnaire
