READING ONE The Farming Life for Me Reading One is a letter to the editor of a magazine for young people. The writer, Zachary Blaine, is a teenage boy who lives on a farm. He explains why he thinks it’s better to grow up on a farm than to grow up in the city.

Reading one

Reading One

READING FOR MAIN IDEAS Page: 24 (c) Zachary explains why he thinks it’s great to grow up on a farm instead of in the city. 2- Zachary gives four main reasons to support his idea. Label them1-4 as they appear in the reading (1-d) Farm children are too busy doing farm work to get into trouble. (2-a) Farm children understand at an early age more about life and death than city kids. (3-f) Farm children understand more about nature than city kids. (4-g) Farm children have a greater sense of responsibility than city kids.

READING FOR DETAILS: Page: 24 Read each statement. Correct the incorrect part. Then write the number of the paragraph that matches this statement.(The corrected part is in red) (a-2) Farm kids have to do a lot of work on the farm such as milk the cow, water the crops, and feed all the animals. (b-5) I feed and water the animals everyday, and I water the crops regularly. (c-4) We know how to choose the best trees in our woods to cut down. (d-2) At my house, there is a lot of work to do after school. (e-3) I remember the first time I pulled a lamb born on our farm. (f-3) I’m (not) used to seeing life and death on the farm.

REACTING TO THE READING: Page: 25 Read the statements, and check the ones that you think Zachary Blaine would agree with. () 3. Growing up with a lot of responsibility is good for the kids. () 5. Most city kids would like to grow up on a farm. () 6. City children might not get into trouble with guns, alcohol, and drugs if they had animals to take care of.

READING TWO: Leaving the Farm p.25 A hundred years ago, most farmers in the United States were small farmers. Now, large farming companies do more and more of the farming. Many small farmers can’t compete. They sell their farms and move their families to the city. Read this article about a farm family in North Dakota who recently moved to the city.

Now answer the following questions. p.26 1.Why does Mr. Halley drive back to his old farm once a week? Ans. He drives back to the farm to keep his connection to the land. 2.Are the Halleys happy they decided to sell the farm? Explain Ans. Yes, they are happy. The children love living in the city. Mr. Halley seems to miss the farm, but he is happy about his new job and increased income

Linking Reading One & Two p.26 City Life Country Life 1. Advantages More jobs ; more income; lower stress(not worrying about money); more stores; closer stores; better programs at school Connection to land/nature; understanding of and wonder at beauty of life and death; kids learn responsibility 2. Disadvantages Work is not meaningful; loss of connection to the land; kids might not have enough to do so they could get in trouble with guns; drugs, or alcohol Very low income; not close to stores and malls; services like telephone or internet not as good as in city

The word “use” can be used in different ways and have different meanings as follows p.27 Sentence 1: Meaning: Definition: I use a computer to write my reports. I write my reports with a computer. Use: to do something with something ( a tool, a machine, etc..) Sentence 2: I used to live in the country. Now I live in New York City. I lived in the country in the past, but now I live in New York City. Used to: was done in the past but is not done now. Sentence 3: I’m used to the noise. At first the sound of traffic kept me awake at night. After living in the city. At the beginning, the noise was strange to me and kept me awake at night, but now I am familiar with it and can sleep. Be/get used to: be or become familiar with something or someone so that it does not seem strange or unusual or difficult
