DICOM WG10: Strategic Advisory Committee Report to DSC meeting June 25, 2002, Paris

WG10 meeting June 24, 2002, Paris. DICOM Strategic Document –Proposal to change the approval and internet distribution: Strategic Document updated and put on the internet immediately after submission by WGs and approval in DSC (shall always include strategic section of WG). Relation to other SDOs and related groups –ANSI X12N, ASTM E07.11, HL7, IHE, JPEG: No news –Status of translations of DICOM codes: no progress this time

DICOM becoming an ISO standard –Wait for the outcome of the decision process in ISO for HL7 becoming an ISO standard ( fast-track or pilot process). –ISO will take a decision in the August meeting in Melbourne. –WG10 will devise a course of action in the September meeting, based on the ISO results. –In the meantime we propose a joint workitem, and in the development we want to try-out the process of working together with ISO/WG2 on a workitem.

Web based reference to DICOM’s permanent objects ( URL) –Workitem proposal finished, for approval in DSC –submitted to ISO to be approved in the August meeting of ISO TC 215 –will be a test case for a formal working together between DICOM and ISO on the creation of a supplement to the DICOM standard, and approved as ISO standard. MPEG & the Visible Light Working Group –WG10 supports the approach proposed by the group

Unicode, Objectives/Requirements: –Full-fidelity, single language pipeline, with different presentations –Ensure Q/R SCP that has persistent objects, can serve SCU with different capabilities –Create multi-lingual archives, multi-lingual pipeline simultaneously. WG6 will explore these requirement for Unicode in DICOM

DICOM standard in XML, objectives: –Consistency of the DICOM Standard, when adding supplements or CPs –Publishing Standard multiple formats: PDF, Word,.. –Maintain/edit/extend standard easier –Improve efficiency and consistency of implementations, test tools, DICOM toolkits. Probably more for test tools, implementations need more context. –More powerful means for information model, SOP Class specification.

DICOM standard publication and maintenance in XML, action: –All members, assess in the companies if there is a real interest to allocate resources to this topic. For instance, a special “publishing WG” could be established. –This group could first look at the both the technical and organizational issues of maintaining the standard in XML.

Strategic planning process We had a closer look at the following main topics: Image distribution all over the world Workflow management Structured reporting objects and templates New imaging technology Quite a number of topics were identified, and in the September meeting we will discuss about the priority of each topic. Also identified the need to communicate about our Strategic Plan topic, at RSNA and in the joint meeting with ISO.

Topics in Acquisition domain: –Workflow outside the Radiology domain: RT, VL, Cardio. Requires specialized workflow. Refreshing the worklist, event based. –Amount of data generated, kind of data generated. More, 3D, real-time, grayscale, color, time-sequence, text Text really broadens the scope: evidence documents, key image note, codes, vocabularies, templates. Need for simple, small documents, e.g. just a few measurements Amount of data will impact performance Need to manage separate objects that do belong together, SOP Class future. modeling instead of SOP ( HL7 way), separate info model from communication

Topics in Acquisition domain: –Integration, data from multiple modalities needed together, fused, merge recipe. Requires synchronization in time and/or space. US + CathLab PET + CT MR + NM –Communication technology Media for exchange, profiles wireless (TCP/IP is on top of this, should be no issue)

Topics in Post-processing domain: –Presentation, have only grayscale presentation currently. color, 3D, waveform, Cine, MR-multiframe hanging protocols multi-modality presentation SR presentation –Interactive collaboration, tele-radiology –Data mining, statistics, need for uniform definition. Should we organize a workshop on this topic?

Topics in Archive domain: –Delete service. All images come together in central archive with satellites. Co-operation in a loosely connected environment. –Co-operation between multiple loosely connected workflow managers.

Topics in Reporting domain: –Harmonization with CDA L3, XML encoding –Next versions of TID 2000, templates –Codes, Vocabulary, Procedure Codes, Diagnostic Codes, HIPAA induced codes

Topics in Result Distribution domain: –Persistent Object Reference –Exchange information outside the DICOM domain –HIPAA, Privacy, Security, Authentication, VPN –CD/DVD for exchange from PACS site to non-PACS site multiple objects, reports, images, compressed images DICOM CD must be readable by all DICOM devices Communicate to referring physician without PACS or specific tools, replace film legal requirement in some countries: give all images to patient

Topics in Treatment/Treatment planning domain: –CAD tools, HPGL standard, templates for implants –3D, image guided surgery, contours, locate images in 3D space multi modality aspect –Image fusion
