Content Causes of Air Pollution Effect of Air Pollution Solutions and Suggestions of HKSAR Government Conclusions

Causes of Air Pollution

Transports Since more cars are used in city area, more exhaust fumes discharge relatively. Also, the buildings in town are tall and this blocks the spread of polluted air, this worsen the problem of air pollution in certain areas.

Burning and Industrial Activities During the process of burning the fossil fuel, many pollutants would be discharged, e.g. carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. Poisonous gases would be discharged by factories and this may cause many diseases, e.g. lung cancer.

Domestic Activities CFCs are organic compounds and were used in making foam items such as foam cups and foam lunch boxes, and in aerosols such as insecticides and hair sprays. Also, the use of CFCs would destroy the ozone layer, so they were banned in 1987.

Waste Incineration Since more and more rubbish have been thrown by residents, we could predict the landfills would become saturated. Moreover, we need to incinerate more and more waste, and the exhaust fumes would be discharged.

Effect of Air Pollution

Effect of Air Pollution Air quality becomes worse - The air contains a lot of polluting gases including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulates and lead particles The sea level rises up - Due to ice melting in polar regions

Effect of Air Pollution Rises in temperature - Greenhouse effect & global warming Irritation to human - Carbon monoxide may causes dizziness, headaches, fainting and eventually death - Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide cause irritation to our respiration system and eyes

Effect of Air Pollution Lower the photosynthesis rate of plants - Polluting gases, smoke and fog block the sunlight Affect of air transportation - Smoke and fog lower the range of vision Acid rain

Solutions & suggestions to HKSAR Government

-Use public transport instead of private car. Citizens in Hong Kong -Use public transport instead of private car. This can reduce the concentration of pollutants such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, etc from exhaust fumes. MTR, a kind of public transport -Avoid smoking and using spray Spray contains CFCS, which can pollute the air. So if we don't use spray, air pollution problem will be less serious. Smoking not only bad for our health, but also cause air pollution! Sprays

Switch off electrical appliances when we don't use them Citizens in Hong Kong Switch off electrical appliances when we don't use them For example, when we switch on the lights, electricity is needed. Generating electricity is by the method of burning coal. If we don't save electricity, air pollution may also get more serious because burning coal can release large amount of carbon dioxide.

Suggestions to HKSAR Government - Education The Government and community groups play an important role in spreading messages of environmental protection through education. e.g. Education through tree-planting which helps to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. - Legislation Laws are made to prevent people from polluting the air.

Suggestions to HKSAR Government - Planting trees beside the road This can make the air clean. -Introducing LPG taxi and light bus scheme This can reduce the gases (carbon dioxide) that pollute the air.
