MLTE Climbing Wall Award Preparing for Assessment

What do I do now? Make sure logbook is up to date and reference page completed. Make sure I have made 30 visits to at least 3 climbing walls Assist on 15 instructional sessions at 2 walls Pass a relevant first aid course Wait three months, normally and book on an assessment course

What does assessment comprise? 6 hours….+ 2 if abseiling module assessed Venue: large commercial wall with bouldering and roped climbing Personal climbing skills Group skills Teaching skills Knowledge and understanding

Personal skills Move confidently on climbing surfaces and be able to demonstrate effectively basic climbing movement skills Lead a number of routes at approx grade F4a displaying a confident and safe approach Demonstrate safe and effective use of a number of belay devices Tested through observed personal performance

Answer Many walls do not have routes this easy! It is about British Severe 3c/4a Question How hard is French 4a?

Group skills Plan and deliver a range of sessions in the following areas:- Warm up and stretching routines Bouldering, movement skills and spotting Bottom roping session Teaching session Tested through observed sessions

Knowledge and understanding History of climbing and associated ethical issues Development of climbing walls Understanding of the safety chain Knowledge of the structure and role of National bodies such as MLTE, BMC etc Climbing grades and calls Tested by a written paper or questioning

Assessment outcomes PASS – Your performance was safe and you performed well in all syllabus areas DEFER – Your performance was safe but was lacking in a few areas of the syllabus FAIL – Either your performance was unsafe or you displayed weak performance in too many areas for you to be given a short re-assessment in line with a deferral
