Citing textual evidence = Quoting the exact passage or sentence to support what you have to say. Use the commas and quotation marks to set off the exact words which support what you think. Also, make sure you have an “analysis” statement that follows the quote.

Using the comma-quote strategy Then something happened. I heard the plumbing rumble, the pipes shudder. Clarisse’s grip on my hair loosened. Water shot out of the toilet, making an arc over my head. He used his powers to beat up some girls According to the text, “Did you see the water? It like grabbed her.” Are these responses full responses to the claim that strange things happen to Percy

Strange things happen to Percy in the beginning of the novel that show he is a half-blood.. Evidence states on page 13, “She exploded into yellow powder, vaporized on the spot…..” Not any normal kid could vaporize his evil teacher.

Percy is the son of Poseidon. The text says, “There was no place else to go so I stepped to the edge of the hole. I turned and jumped… I wasn’t wet, I was breathing under water.” This shows that he is the son of the sea god.

In the beginning of the story, Percy has a strange thing happen to him that shows he is a half-blood. “ I did the only thing that came naturally. I swung the sword. The metal blade hit the shoulder and went right through her body.”

Strange things happen to him like “water attacked N.B. and he can vaporize his math teacher.”

Many strange things happen to Percy that show he is a half-blood. For example, from the story it says, “ She exploded into yellow powder, vaporized on the spot.” Not many normal kids go on field trips and vaporize their teacher into yellow powder.

You can tell that Percy is the son of Poseidon because whenever he is in the water he feels stronger and healed. In the book it says, “He pushed me into the creek…But then something happened. The water seemed to wake up my senses.” Then he goes and battles 5 mean, strong people and he wins. Normally the water wouldn’t give him that kind of strength. Since Poseidon is the of of the sea, you can tell that he is Percy’s dad (page ).

Citing Textual Evidence Get out homework and three (if possible) colored pencils/highlighters. Trade homework with the people in your row. Draw a box around the claim. Draw a box around the quoted evidence. Circle the comma, the quotation marks and the page number. Draw a box around the comment/explanation. Read the paragraph. Does it make sense? Return to author; look over it; hand it in.

Evaluate these examples Strange things happen to Percy that shows he is a half blood. An example from the passage is, “Mrs. Dodds and the moment when she changed into the thing with pointed teeth and leathery wings.” Not a lot of teachers have sharp pointed teeth or leathery wings. How does this prove that Percy is a half-blood?

Percy has incredible powers. “ I wasn’t wet. I mean, I could feel the coolness of the water, I could see where the fire on my clothes had been quenched. But when I touched my own shirt it felt perfectly dry.” (page ) Analysis? How does the quote show that Percy has powers? Need some info here to help explain what is happening

Incidents happen that help the reader understand that Percy is the son of Poseidon. “I stepped back into the creek. Instantly I felt better.” This shows he was healed by the water. Who said this? Where? Why? Lots of people step into water and feel better. How does this prove that Percy is connected to Poseidon?

Zeus is grateful for Percy’s accomplishment, but does not trust him. An example of this is when Zeus said, “To show you my thanks, I shall spare your life. I do not trust you, Perseus Jackson. I do not like what your arrival means for the future of Olympus. For the sake of peace in the family I shall let you live.” (p 343). Even though Zeus intended on killing Percy, he understands what is going on and spare Percy’s life.

Percy has incredible powers. Evidence that proves this is when Percy says, “I shouted, ‘Wave!’ Immediately a wave surged up from no where and engulfed the boar, wrapping around it like a blanket.” (page 325) This shows that he has incredible powers because a normal kid could not yell “Wave” and a wave would appear. You have to have powers lik Percy to make it happen.

Percy is the son of Poseidon. It says in the text, “By the time I looked up, the sign was already fading out. I could still make out the hologram of green light, spinning and gleaming. A 3-tipped spear - a trident.” (p ) The trident is the symbol of power of Poseidon so that means Percy was claimed by him.

Support one of these statements about Sally Jackson: - Sally is a weak woman. - Sally is a brave woman. - Sally is a negligent mother. - Sally is a caring mother. Use the comma-quote strategy. Use pages 29 – 43 and/or 44 – 56 to find some textual evidence. (or other pages that you find)
