Use of Language to Advocate a Cause PROPOSAL

What is a proposal?!?

What is a proposal? Definition: (n) a plan or suggestion that is given formally to an official person or group Examples: 1) Student Union’s proposal to WFLMS Admin about backpacks in classrooms; 2) research proposal; 3) small business proposal

Remember A proposal is a formal type of writing Audience is usually a business, or someone in control of something Use formal language The purpose of a proposal to suggest some form of action – what do you want your audience to do?

Before you write BE PREPARED – DO YOUR RESEARCH! Have a clear understanding of your OWN goals and objectives Know your audience Keep track of all of your research/prep work Make a personal connection with your audience

How to write a proposal Factual Title Addressed to a specific person/group

Paragraph One This should very clearly state what problem you wish to address and the general idea of how you are proposing to solve it. Leave the details for the next few paragraphs

Body Paragraphs These should each talk about a different issue in the proposal. Your proposal should have several steps that must be taken to solve the problem. So, each body paragraph should go into detail about a different issue and how your proposal will resolve each issue

Final Paragraph This paragraph should reiterate (say again, but in different words) why the proposal will help solve the problem. Give contact information so your audience can get in touch with you Do NOT sign it

Homework Create your proposal Remember – when you present your position to me you are NOT allowed to read from your proposal. This is a TWO part assignment
