Energy Assessment Tools and Methods National Environmental Partnership Summit 2007 May 8, 2007 Cam Metcalf Executive Director John Sparks TDI Coordinator

2 Make Commitment to Continual Improvement  Energy Management (EM) is a process of continual improvement  Organizations see financial returns from committed Energy Management Programs  EMPs strive to improve energy performance  Success based on: Commitment Regularly assessing energy performance Implementing steps to increase Energy Efficiency (E2) Don’t Just Pay the Bill!

3 Energy Management Program MANAGEMENTTECHNICAL GOALS TARGETS PROJECTS MEASURE & VERIFY MONITOR & MEASURE ENERGY PROFILE ENERGY ASSESSMENT

4 How do I find Energy Management Opportunities? Monitor Energy Use Energy Profile Baseline Energy Assessment Energy Balance Feasibility Study Self-assessment System Expert Outside Consultant Utility, University

5 Energy Bill Analysis: “The Low Hanging Fruit”  Essential component of any energy management program Continuing account of energy use & cost Keeping up-to-date records of monthly energy consumption & associated costs A separate record will be required for each type of energy used, i.e., gas, electric, oil, etc. Utility data can be electronically monitored by internet-based tools

6 Tracking Energy Use

7 Monthly Energy Usage & Costs  Trends & irregularities in energy usage & costs can be detected  The relative merits of energy conservation & load management can be assessed  Plotting the ratio of energy consumption to production may also be useful For industry, appropriate measures of production can be gross sales, number of units produced, pounds of raw materials used, etc. For commercial, the energy usage/cost can be benchmarked against building size

8

9 Completing an Energy Balance  Collect energy usage (electric & gas) from utility bills  Prepare equipment survey that contains the rating of all major energy consuming equipment calculate annual energy usage for each type, annual operating hours & the efficiency  Duty factors & load factors must be used to get the energy usage by the equipment Duty factor is the fraction of the equipment operating hours when the equipment is running (cycling on) Load factor is the ratio of average power consumption to the nominal rated input  The total energy usage estimated by all equipment surveyed should equal the energy usage from the utility bills

Air Compressor Survey 1 Duty Factor is the fraction of the equipment operating hours when equipment is running (Cycling On) 2 Load Factor is the ratio of average power consumption to the nominal rated input 3 Annual Energy Usage = kW x Annual Operating Hours x Duty Factor x Load Factor/ Efficiency Equipment Description LocationMotor Rating (HP) Motor Rating (kW) Annual Operating Hours Duty Factor 1 Load Factor 2 EfficiencyAnnual Energy Usage 3 (kWh/yr) Quincy (120 psi) Mechanical Room , ,325 Total261476,325

Energy Management Opportunities Annual Energy Usage and Cost by Percentage

12 Benefits of Energy Balance  Determine which processes to concentrate efforts on for reducing & eliminating energy usage  Establishes a baseline over which efficiency improvements can be tracked & benchmarked  Effective tool to determine & compare economic feasibility of various energy efficient improvement strategies

2007 Environmental Summit New Orleans Found Money Utility Bill Analysis Case Studies Cam Metcalf Executive Director John Sparks TDI Coordinator

14 What is KEEPS?  Kentucky Energy Efficiency Program for Schools energy costs were about $156,000,000  KEEPS’ requires a commitment to the Energy Program  Energy Program (EP) Organizes the energy management project Defines energy usage goals Involves all levels of the school district or university/college  For EP, the school district or university/college must Appoint an energy manager Establish an energy team Institute an energy policy  KEEPS provides tools, curriculum, training, coaching & technical expertise

15 Bullitt County School District

16 Case Study: Bullitt Co. School District  Collected utility usage and billing histories back to January  Tracking 92 meters (electric, gas & water).  By looking at utility bills alone, identified almost $40,000 worth of savings/cost avoidance opportunities Accounts charged State Tax-refund opportunity Abandoned meter since August 2005 (customer charge was $280 a month) Graphing data makes it easy to see abnormal spikes in usage.

17 Found Money-Electricity Bills  Daviess County High Schools  State Dept. Education Requested KPPC Help with Electric Billing Audit  Found that school was in wrong rate Switched demand rates Annual savings of $6000  School has it’s own transformer eligible for rate discount it wasn’t getting Resulted in $20,000 credit

18 Found Money - Electricity  MBM Corporation, Refrigerated Warehouse  Energy conscious company Replaced HP sodium lights with T5 fluorescent Asked KPPC to help identify more opportunities  KPPC’s E2 team examined the utility bills Uncovered electric bill rate errors Resulted in $21,000 credit

19 Found Money-Electricity Bills  Calvert City Municipal Water and Sewer  Requested KPPC Energy Assessment Electric billing analysis revealed: 2 accounts on wrong rate Several paying state taxes –Utilities are public entities and tax exempt Recovered $1,000 in annual operating expense One-time $1200 credit

20 Found Money-Water Bills  The Thoroughbred Center  Training for Thoroughbred Horses  700 to 800 horses  Several barns, 3 racetracks  KPPC examined water bills Found sewer charges The center has no sewers Resulted in $ 14,000 credit
