You Made It To America Life in the tenements.

Where to Live? Many ethnic immigrant groups chose to live together in the same neighborhood.

Finding a Place. With all the immigrants coming into America, some people were looking for ways to make money, so they built tenement buildings to house new arrivals. The Buildings were very close together and not well made.

What Was it Like? Because landlords were trying to make as much money as possible, they tried to squeeze in as many apartments as possible in the tenement buildings. This meant small, cramped living quarters. What do you notice about this picture?

Imagine Sleeping in the Kitchen! And the Kitchen is in the Basement!

Life Could Be Extremely Cramped. Apartments were very narrow.

Sometimes People Just Wanted a Place to Sleep.

Many Apartments Didn’t Have Windows. So you needed to be creative to get some outside air.

How Many of You Have a Backyard?

Staying Outside Could Be Dangerous.
