Theme & Theme Days  A Colorful Journey… what the heck does that mean?  The schedule is rooted in leadership!

Theme Days  A Color A Day  Monday, August 4 th – Ball State Sprit Day – Wear Your Polos  Tuesday, August 5 th – Orange You Glad It’s Tuesday?  Wednesday, August 6 th – On Wednesdays’ we wear pink!  Thursday, August 7 th – Don’t Be BLUE, it’s Thursday!  Friday, August 8 th – True Colors – What’s your favorite?  Monday, August 11 th – Purple Monday!  Tuesday, August 12 th – Go Green Tuesday!

Awareness, Knowledge, Skills  That’s how the schedule was set up!  Awareness – A philosophical understanding of what we do and why we do it.  Knowledge – A practical understanding of the rules, policies, and procedures that allow us to do what we do.  Skills – An opportunity to practice what we do in a safe and supportive environment.

SSO Schedule Highlights  Early Morning to Late Evening DAILY!  A lot of time with your staff and in-hall!  A lot of presentations from outside presenters!  A lot to do… just a lil’ bit of time to do it!  Fun & Special Events

SSO Schedule & Highlights (Cont.)  Fun & Special Events  Opening Speaker – Mitch Isaacs  All Staff Photo Tomorrow  Role Call – Friday  University Resource Fair – Friday  Service Day – Friday  Mock Rock – Saturday  Night at the Apartments – Next Sunday  The Diversity Speaker – Dr. Maura Cullen

Meals  4 Types  Breakfast / Dinner In-Hall  Dining Center Meals  Dinning Center Buffets  Catered Meals  Stick To Your Schedule!  DO NOT LOSE YOUR MEAL CARDS!  Vegan & Vegetarian Options

SSO Student Staff Expectations  Stick to your schedule!  Be present and on time to all events and training sessions!  Remember, “Early is on time, on time is late, and late is unacceptable.”  Cell phones should be utilized only when appropriate!  Be Flexible. Things might change unexpectedly. Just “Go with the flow.”  Be engaged in the presentations, and ask questions if you don’t understand something.  Be prepared to take notes. Take your binders, pens, pencils, etc.  Some questions may be hall specific, or related to your hall directors expectations, so be sure to write those down and ask during in-hall time.  Respect each other. Each member of the team will learn at a differently.

SSO Student Staff Expectations (Cont.)  First-Year RAs and Returning RAs all have valuable experiences to share and learn from. While we want you to learn from each other, not everyone has all the answers. That’s why we’re here to learn together!  Read the manual on your own time, and become familiar with it.  Dress comfortably—but not too comfortably. It is not acceptable to wear pajamas and NOBODY wants to see your skin!  Take care of yourself! Make time to eat, sleep, shower, etc.  Do NOT fall asleep in sessions. We know days can get long and tiring, but if you feel your eyes closing, doodle, play with play dough, etc.  Get to know and start building relationships with your peers and directors, as well as other student staff members and supervisors.

SSO Returning Staff Expectations  Be a leader and a role model to new staff. Help them when they come to you for guidance.  Take initiative. You are expected to be the first to volunteer for tasks that no one else wants to do! You have to role model behavior that shows that every task is important.  Have a positive attitude!  Try new things this year. This is a new year and you will have new experiences. Stretch yourself and expand your limits.  Become better at something that you fear or don’t think you are good at.  Use your position as a way to develop yourself for your future career in life.  Be a team player… This is not RA Idol!  If you don’t know something, ask and encourage others to do the same

Student Staff Website

Evals  Available nightly after 6pm on the student staff website!  Pre-Assessment available now… please take that tonight!  You MUST complete these nightly, we really do look at them… We promise!

SWAG & Social Media  Engage on social media: #BSUSSO14  HRL SWAG BAGS! WOOT WOOT!
