Steve Darn1 Curriculum Development Working towards a coherent language teaching policy

Steve Darn2 Vision The goal of Koç School is to be respected nationally and internationally as a model K-12 school offering an educational program of the highest academic and ethical standards.

Steve Darn3 Mission Statement Koç School is a Turkish school with a global perspective. Our multi-cultural academic community, innovative methodology, and coherent K-12 bilingual program engage all students in developing their intellectual and human qualities so that they will become confident, ethical leaders and responsible citizens of Turkey and of the world community.

Steve Darn4 Some Objectives Multi-Culturalism Develop a community that understands and respects cultural differences. Provide fluency in Turkish and English and proficiency in a 3rd language. Employ a variety of community activities to promote positive intersection providing opportunities to experience other cultures.

Steve Darn5 Coherent Bilingual K-12 Program Recognize individual stages of development in a vertically and horizontally integrated program Use a range of tools to assess student progress and the program itself Teach English through a sequentially consistent English language program beginning in Kindergarten Encourage bilingual nature of community by promoting bilingualism among all its members

Steve Darn6 Some Questions Does the school intend that its students should speak English? Does the school teach ESL or EFL? Does the school have an American or British bias? Does the school encourage students to take international examinations? Does the syllabus integrate language and skills?

Steve Darn7 More Questions Does the school use course books? How are they chosen? Which approach to language teaching/learning does the school adopt? How does the school assess students? Is there a curriculum/syllabus? How are teachers recruited? Who are they? Are they evaluated? What is the student profile?

Steve Darn8 ELT Goal The goal of the K-12 English program at Koç is to develop students who can communicate fluently in both written and spoken English, who can engage in a variety of contemporary and traditional international texts/media, and who can display independent, creative and critical thinking.
