Wind of change: cloud computing as convergence tool for digital heritage services Rimvydas Laužikas Vilnius University, Faculty of Communication

Memory institutions, ICT, society 1.0 If you are in need of memory, you must [physically] visit the museum, archive, library... Memory as “luxury goods” [reserved for scientists] [the time of curator’s]

Memory institutions, ICT, society 2.0 If you need memory, you must [physically or virtually] visit the museum, archive, library... Memory as “luxury goods” [reserved for scientists] [the time of “user’s needs”], 2012: ~ 24 mil. objects, ~ 4 mil. unique visitors, ~ 77 % of visits 0-60 sec.

Why? ICT change the society [consumer practices, behaviour...]: -“generation of personal choice” [users segmentation] -“permanently updated” [as website] -“multimediality” [5 senses] -“interactivity” [I can change, USG] -“participating” [active relation] -“openity” [open access, world,...] -“experiencity” [experience economy] -“easility” [second level services] Important for non-virtual services too....

Cloud computing: what’s new? From computer as tool to computer (software, infrastructure, platform, network... as service.... >>>

Cloud computing any questions about the hardware or software obsolescence... any questions about the software licenses and piracy... any questions about the computer administration and security... any questions about the space for long term preservation... any questions about long term preservation strategies (emulation, etc.)... One question only...user does not control his created and preserved information and systems security.... it’s somewhere in the clouds...., but, actually... all our money is “somewhere in the clouds”....

Memory institutions, ICT, society 3.0 If you are need memory, we can propose the “memory services” for you... Memory as “popular goods” [reserved for general public] [the time of crowdsourcing and participation] memory as “second level” service [...is designed for simplified interaction of end-users with the systems...]

The “second level services” can be... service package that enables to use the digital content in GIS mobile and smart devices; service package that allows indexing and thus singling out the digital objects service package that allows to easily link the digital content with QR codes service package that allows the users presenting the users generated content virtual exhibitions tools virtual paths tools service of creating a personal profile and etc....

Ideas/good practice -The European and the national Hackathons -The mobile Apps stories

The greatest surplus value of cloud computing may be created in: Sectors where specialized and expensive software and specialized information services are necessary. Sectors where there is a small number of users. Small businesses institutions and individual users. for which it is not worth to or which lack intellectual forces to purchase or create software tools and information self-oriented-services. Limited-budget institutions that cannot afford to regularly upgrade and update and maintain in high quality their computer infrastructure. Rapidly changing sectors where regular computer infrastructure upgrades give a competitive advantage over other competitors.

What’s next? Maybe... quantum computing....
