A Solid waste management system for rosario west central school Jovie campomanes-palma Teacher iii Rosario west central school Division of batangas province

Introduction The study is focused on establishing a Solid Waste Management System (SWMS) within the ROSARIO WEST CENTRAL SCHOOL.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY As an advocate of clean and green environment, waste management in school has given priority since garbage is one of the major problems of ROSARIO WEST CENTRAL SCHOOL. The school used to dispose all the garbage in one small heap. The heap where all the waste of the school are being dumped is not enough. That is why, the need for solid waste management in the school arises.

The problem ROSARIO WEST CENTRAL SCHOOL is an institution that values the environment. As a progressing learning community, arising problems regarding garbage is taken into consideration.

With its population of one thousand one hundred fourteen (1114) pupils and thirty-two (32) personnel, the amount of waste generated everyday is dumped in a 2x2 square meters heap located at the school’s backyard.

Considering the area and the amount of waste being disposed into it, the reality of improper solid waste management is evident. The absence of Material Recovery Facility (MRF) adds burden. Even the local sanitary services do not reach the school for collection.

Strategies/methodologies This part of the study deals with how the operational framework otherwise known as the Plan of Action to be achieved. Here the combination of different methods of disposal to create a model suitable for the school is implemented. It contains the detailed processes, flow charts and materials to be achieved.

The project time table has accomplished successfully The project time table has accomplished successfully. The proper segregation of waste is religiously done in each classroom through close monitoring of the school principal, class advisers, staff, administrative aide and concern parents.

The project, “Unan Para Kay Juan” has materialized as well. Additional source of income is realized through selling of plastic bottles and papers every Friday. The project, “Unan Para Kay Juan” has materialized as well. The burden of too much waste has lessen. As a result, the school became a better place for learning: clean, safe and environment-friendly for the school children.

conclusions Through the establishment of Solid Waste Management in Rosario West Central School, the following conclusions have been realized: Wastes/Garbages are common problem in any institution particularly in school The implementation of SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM in RWCS would only be a success if the stakeholders would give their full support.

3. Constant practice of segregation would become a habit for the school children as early as kindergarten through the teachers’ guidance. 4. Awareness to the disadvantages of improper solid waste disposal is necessary thru proper dissemination of information and implementation.

recommendations The school could think of other ways of minimizing solid wastes through recycling and reusing. The small fund coming from the selling of plastic bottles and papers could be used in the maintenance of the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) of the school.

The MRF needs proper handling to maintain its function. Active participation of the community is necessary to meet the desired success of the program.
