Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Agenda  EPRI Workshop  Conclusion of stakeholder webinars  Next steps – stakeholder “data collection” - Prioritization of end uses - Interviews  Project timeline 2

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 EPRI Load Shape Library Interest Group Workshop  DNV KEMA attended workshop held May 1-2, 2012 – Dallas, TX  Purpose: 2012 Load Research Objectives & Deliverables “Load Shape Library” Develop a framework for creating a load shape repository with secure web access to member funders. To include aggregate primary data by sector and end-use. Source of data to be determined by user group Establish a “Load Data Users Group” comprising of member funders and interested utilities to advise on repository structure and data-related topics Deliverables: A member-accessible, preliminary load shape software in addition to a summary report detailing the status of the “Load Shape Library” at the end of the year  Whole premise and end use (populated with existing CEED first)  Interested in investigating alternatives to metering to keep costs down – NIALMs, CDA  Very interested in the RTF project – happy to be connected 3

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Stakeholder Webinars - Completed  Purpose: Brainstorm with stakeholders about the specific information that will be necessary to develop the business case  Series of Webinars: - Webinar #1 - April 25, Webinar #1.5 – May 4, 2012 (Repeat of Webinar #1) - Webinar #2 – May 10, Follow up to ensure proper interpretation, and - Gather additional information  About 40 participants  PowerPoint summarizing feedback, plus additional meeting notes  Feedback develops the beginning of the framework for the case 4

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Webinars – What We Discussed  Concerns about existing data  Users of the information and major issues - Energy Efficiency - Demand Response - Load Forecasting - T&D Planning - Resource Acquisition/Integrated Resource Planning - Smart Grid - Power Marketers - Others  Other Themes Heard Throughout the Discussion - Prioritizing end uses - Data transferability - Data granularity needs - Sampling/study considerations 5

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Next Step – Data Collection from Stakeholders  Stakeholder priorities - Stakeholders asked for chance to prioritize end uses - Also include data granularity requirements and measurement needs - Very short survey to a wide audience (will be sent to all contacts on original list) 6

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Lists of End-uses for Prioritization 7 **Please review end use categories and provide additional categories to Lorin Molander by May 30, if desired.**

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Lists of Measures for Prioritization - Residential 8 **Please review end use categories and provide additional categories to Lorin Molander by May 30, if desired.**

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Lists of Measures for Prioritization – Non-Residential 9 **Please review end use categories and provide additional categories to Lorin Molander by May 30, if desired.**

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Next Step – Data Collection from Stakeholders  Stakeholder interviews - Feedback from webinars was used to refine the list of questions to be used in the individual interviews - Hone in on specifics of needs - Gather specific details to support value determination ($$) - Support other assessments: - Updates since No-action option - Telephone, in-person - Target: 25 PNW, 10 National 10

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 12 TopicQuestion Intro [Record name, organization, and contact information of respondent.] Intro Please briefly describe your role and function within your organization. Intro Please briefly describe how you currently perform the function you are responsible for or that you contribute to. IntroHow do you use (or could you use) end-use load shapes for your analyses?

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 13 TopicQuestion Investment What types of decisions are made from the results of your analyses? Investment Do these decisions include whether to make investments of some type? Investment [If yes to above] How much of an investment does your organization (or your clients) typically make based on the results of your analyses? How often? Investment On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all important and 10 being very important, how important is the accuracy of the end- use information to the overall results of your analyses? InvestmentWhat are the risks of using potentially inaccurate load shapes?

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 14 TopicQuestion Current State What is the primary source (or sources) for the end-use load shapes you are currently using? (E.g., ELCAP, DEER, developed in-house, etc.) Current State/Updates since 2009 Are you using any load shapes that have been developed in the past three years? If so, which ones? Current State Do you have any concerns about the end-use load shapes you currently use? If yes, what are your concerns? Current State On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all concerned and 10 being very concerned, how concerned are you that the end- use load shapes you are using are not accurate? Current State/No-action option Do you see any issues with using the same end-use load shapes you currently have for the foreseeable future? If yes, what are those issues? Current State On behalf of the RTF, DNV KEMA has sent out a short survey asking organizations to prioritize residential and non-residential end-uses. Have you had a chance to complete this survey? Current State (End use priorities, data granularity, measurement needs) [If no above, provide paper copy of short online survey to complete at this time.] Future StateDoes your organization have any plans to develop new end-use load shapes in the near future, either by metering or by other methods such as conditional demand analysis?

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 15 TopicQuestion Data Type What types of load shapes do you use or are you most interested in: end-use load shapes or measure shapes (or both)? Data Type What measurement units are you most interested in: power, harmonics, temperature, kvar, etc. Supporting Info On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all beneficial and 10 being very beneficial, how beneficial would it be to have supporting occupancy characteristic information? Supporting Info On a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all beneficial and 10 being very beneficial, how beneficial would it be to have supporting behavioral information? Supporting InfoOn a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all beneficial and 10 being very beneficial, how beneficial would it be to have supporting building/system characteristics?

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 16 TopicQuestion Granularity What level of granularity do you require for your analyses? Less than 1 minute 1 minute 5 minute 10 minute 15 minute 30 minute 60 minute Daily Greater than daily Granularity Do you foresee your data granularity needs changing five years from now? Accuracy Do you have specific accuracy and precision requirements for the end-use load shapes and other variables? [For example, PURPA requirements were 90% confidence estimates are within +/- 10%.] AccuracyIf yes, what are they? AccuracyAre there any specific regulatory or other “client” requirements and/or expectations in terms of accuracy?

Project Status Meeting May 23, 2012 Proposed Interview Questions 17 TopicQuestion Sampling Are the majority of your analyses focused particularly on one end-use, or are they focused on interactions among end uses? Sampling On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being not at all important and 10 being very important please rank the usefulness of the following: a.Case studies of household appliance usage b.Statistical sample of single end-uses within selected houses c.Statistical sample of multiple end-uses within selected houses d.Case studies of non-residential end-use consumption e.Statistical sample of single end-uses within selected of non- residential sites f.Statistical sample of multiple end-uses within selected non- residential sites Study LengthDo you have specific requirements or feedback for how long an end use study should be in the field?
