The base form of the verb occurs in the present.

Base Form I bake pies for fun. Jim knows how to multiply. You eat too many cookies.

The present participle is currently happening.

Present Participle To form the present participle, use the helping verb is and add an –ing ending to the base form of the verb.

Present Participle I am writing a paper. Jim is spinning in circles. You are paining your toenails.

The past tense already happened.

Past Tense To form the past tense of the verb you add –ed.
