Designing and Developing Learning Content with CART Why CART? Theoretica l Backgroun d CART Stages Summary

CART Targets Acquisition, Application, & Validation Learning Cycle Demonstrate Acquire Apply CollaborateValidate

CART Is Comprised of Four Stages  Create  Author  Review  Test Designer and SME scope module Designer and Developer prepare module SME reviews module for accuracy QA conducts standards review and checks functionality

Inputs to CART originate in Analysis and Curriculum Design  Training Needs Analysis  Audience Analysis  Content Types  Curriculum Maps  Delivery Methods  Tutor Output

 ADDIE  Dick and Carey  Mager CART stages correspond to common Instructional Design methodologies

CART and ADDIE CART

Identify Instructional Goals Conduct Instructional Analysis Identify Entry Behaviors Write Performance Objectives Develop Test Items Develop Instructional Strategy Develop/Select Instructional Materials Design and Conduct Formative Evaluation Design and Conduct Summative Evaluation Revise Instruction CART and Dick and Carey * CART *The Systematic Design of Instruction, Walter Dick and Lou Carey

CART Stages A R T C

CART: The CREATE Stage The process of defining a module Designer, with input from SME Use the eStudy Create Form  What is it?  Who does it ?  How is it done?

CART: The CREATE Form  The Create Form provides prompts to help the Designer and SME define: – Module scope – Learning objectives – Prerequisite skills – Practice activities  The Create Form also provides prompts and fields for the Designer to compose module content prior to input in the eStudy template.

CART: The AUTHOR Stage The process of developing a module Designer and Developer eStudy Author Form eStudy Template Viewlet Builder Other tools as needed  What is it?  Who does it ?  How is it done?

CART: The AUTHOR Form  The eStudy Author Form is the source document used by the Developer to input content into the eStudy template. The Author form includes placeholders for: – Text – Knowledge Checks – Viewlets – Other module components (e.g. gfx, tables, etc.)

CART: The REVIEW Stage Content review by a SME SME, Designer, Developer eStudy SME Review Form eStudy Change Request Form  What is it?  Who does it ?  How is it done?

CART: The SME Review Form  The SME Review Form guides the SME’s review of deliverable content after it is developed in the eStudy template  The SME records feedback on the SME Review Form to indicate acceptability of or changes to the content

CART: The Change Request Form  The eStudy Change Request Form enables management of changes to deliverables once they are in the eStudy Template  The form is used only for adding new content or functionality to a module  The eStudy Change Request Form includes fields for explaining the rationale for the change

CART: The TEST Stage QA review of the deliverable Resource(s) assigned to QA eStudy QA Form  What is it?  Who does it ?  How is it done?

CART: The QA Form  The eStudy QA Form guides the final review of a module before it is released  The Checklist focuses on a module’s adherence to standards and performance of interface and content functionality

CART: Process Summary  Create  Author  Review  Test Aligns needs, content & objectives Produces effective delivery & interactions Confirms relevance and accuracy Assures quality of deliverables

Following the CART steps results in high-quality web-based training Alignment of needs, content and objectives Effective delivery and interaction Relevant and accurate content Quality Assurance
